I've got my first paying job for a dimensional sign never having sold a job like this before I don't have the foggiest idea what to charge
its a 2'x 4'x 3/4" hdu sign it will either be
hand carved and gilded approx 2 books of gold will be needed
or it will be sandblasted with no gold

First of all . .. 3/4" won't cut it. 1",,, maybe.. 1.5" is the norm for a sign that size.
Personally, I get $125-$175.00 per square foot for a regular "dimensional" sign. Then, goldleaf on a dimensional piece goes for about $.50 per square inch, roughly......
Then, it depends on how you are going to mount it. Between two poles or to the side of a building. Exterior or interior..... Lots to consider in the quote.
Hope this helps you BEFORE you quote the job !!

We are still at about $85.00 Sq.Ft. for 1.5" thick single face HDU or CEDAR. HMMM maybe I better re-think my pricing? Just tonight we were doing extensive analysis and realized the materials cost for our dimensional signs was way too high versus the sales price.

okay I was in a hurry yesterday and wasnt real thourough the hdu itself will be 3/4" backed with mdo so i guess that makes it actually 1 1/2" here is an example of what the carved and gilded version would look like

[Roll Eyes] Why put an inferior product (MDO) that can rot onto a high performance substrate like HDU? With all the time you'll spend bonding the HDU to the MDO, then preping the MDO to try to make it last up to half or less the life of HDU, you could use 1 1/2 inch HDU from the start. If you sandblast 3/4 HDU to a reasonable depth, you're only going to have 3/8 inch thick HDU in the blasted areas. If you insist on using an MDO backer, I still wouldn't use any less than 1 inch HDU.

I'm getting from $150.00 a square foot for small signs down to $65.00 a square foot for big ones. That's for a basic sign, but I usually try to up sell some carving or gold. My methods are so fast that even a 4x8 at $65 a square foot for a basic signs results in getting close to $200 an hour, or $100 an hour plus 50% profit.

Richard, the thickness you need depends on the application. How will it be mounted?

You definately need at least 1" but I would go with 1 1/2" to get the depth you need and still have a good thickness left after carving or blasting.

If you have questions you can email me and I will answer anything I can. I'm no expert but have done quite a few HDU signs this year.
