Is it possible?
I got some vector art in AI format and have to weld two scrolls together for the image I need, but it welds to a solid background, no more outlines.
Can this be done in any other way?
And what file format should I get for Corel next time I aquire images, so I won't have this problem?
Help would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Lotti, perhaps I don't understand your question. If you weld two objects and the result has a fill, just use the line tool in the left hand toolbar to add an outline, then click on X in the paint fill tool to delete the fill. Vic G

You can not weld outlines, only closed objects. You can convert the outline to object (gets a little weird sometimes) and then weld them together. Also when you pull in Illustrator stuff that was objects with outlines it shows up in Corel as 2 objects - one have no fill and an outline, the other just the fill. I usually have artwork sent over as an .eps file - its more universal across platforms. I hope that helps, if not be more speficif and we will try again.

Yes Lottie there is another way.

If I am understanding you correctly, this is an AI format scroll and you want to duplicate it and mirror it and then weld the two images to create a Symmetrical shaped image?

If that is the case then you could place the two images together and then combime them. Once you have done that you can manually break apart the appropriatre nodes and join the appropriate ones back together.

THAT is the hard way though. I don't believe the problem is in the fact that these are AI vector files but rather that there is a break in the vector somewhere that doesn't show up until it is welded.

If you wish to, e-mail me the file and I will see what the problem is.

Or could you mean by outlines, that inside the contour are more lines creating detail, & welding the perimeter is working, but you lose the detail? If each scroll has more lines then just the outer contour, but they all select together, then before welding, you would either ungroup, or in some cases "release compound objects" (that's ai terminolgy, for Corel, maybe uncombine?)

Dave is right, I want to mirror the scrolls.
When open the image in Corel, I get a solid backgound behind it, so that I can't see the lines until I remove the fill and give it an outline. Obviously the problem is, that you can't weld outlines together.
I tried welding them first, but then I can't remove the fill anymore.
Sorry, computer rookie... [Roll Eyes]
If I can't figure it out, I'll take you up on your offer, Dave.
Thanks.

Lotti,

Sometimes AI files come in with a bounding box. Set VIEW to wireframe and hit F4 to see if there is, indeed, a bounding box. If so it will be grouped with all the other shapes so, select (all) and ungroup, delete the offending box and weld as normal.

Lotti, when you import the .ai file into Corel, it is grouped together. After importing, select "ungroup", then select "combine". Make a copy and you will be able to weld them together.

BINGO!!!
Mike figured it out right, thanks so much, and to the others who helped.
How are you doing there, Dave? Try it out, it works. Special thanks to you.
In the meantime, I cheated and gave the scroll a heavier ouline, change to bitmap, trace and clean up a bit. Worked too, but is not as nice
looking.

Another way to eliminate the fill problem is to give it no fill,...the "x" on top of the corel pallette and an outline the color of your choice, to make the shapes viewable

Yep Lotti...I opened the file you sent me and it was just a simple matter of ungrouping and then combining instead. [Smile]
