read all u can to be sure you dont get caught in an upgade trap.
Also, we all will live to see the time when you must have internet access to operate your machine. They plan on making you log and identify your software every time you BOOT. (ever wonder why Real Player takes over your machine, is so slow, and so hated)?

Hey Curtis, That's pretty much greek to me, I never heard of Yukon, Palladium, or Longhorn, (or SLQ Server or Blackcomb either for that matter) & they sure don't sound like microsoft OS names I'm used to, (except maybe SLQ has the same short & sweet ring to it.)
What is your summery of it all? If you got XP don't upgrade for awhile? If you don't have XP, don't get it now?
My newest computer came with XP home. I partitioned it to run Casmate on a 98 platform, since the feature to run in XP as a "virtual" 98 OS didn't work. Anyway I upgraded (crossgrade) to Flexi 7, so I should be able to switch to just using XP for whatever benefit there may be. Personally I've heard more praise for XP Pro, & I'm not sure if migrating back to the XP home partition is worth the trouble.
I read your post to see if it affected my decision, but just got further confused.

those names are code names for the future incarnations of win XP.. There likely will be another realease of XP next year earliest just like win 98 came was upgraded to win 98 SE
That is the jist of it. so there will be a time (after about aug of 2003) when you should NOT upgrade to XP because you will be screwed. You will have to pay another $199 to get the new version. And the WPA system will make sure of it.
By the way, the crackers of the world are having a field day taking on M$ and beating their WIN Product Activation. They take it as a contest to see who can be first to beat it. The latest is a change in the service pack which was broken in less than an hour after realease..

David and Joe..I am with you guys..I am not in a "Chicken Little" mode yet..The Sky Is NOT Falling!!!
In fact..I LIKE Win XP so far..a couple of minor probs but definitely superior to Win 95/98/2000 for my purposes.
One of these days, maybe folks will get over the "Bill Gates is going to control our lives" syndrome.
For the benefit of the folks who "hate" computers but seem to use them to put down computer users on this BB. I feel really really sorry for ya!!!!!

I dont see any one putin' down computer users in this post. In fact, I am a heavy computer user and I have never felt anyone put me or anyone else down for using one. Likewise, I won my P4 1.8 GIG super machine for my work using computers.
And, I like win XP too. It is a good product. I enjoyed it when in Beta and I enjoyed filling out the end user reports. In a way, maybe I contributed to its success.
But, let me help you. The topic is future possible hasssles XP users may have to confront.... Personally, I would not enjoy being the one to buy XP and then 87 days later have an upgrade come out and have to fork over another $199.

Well guys, I keep cars 10-15 years, cameras 25 years, but computers and software have to be upgraded every year!! I can count maybe 25 computers I've bought since I started soldering them together in 1977.
Well I'm glad the bubble is over, the computer growth in capabilities has flattened out and I can start to make money with it.
The days of spending $5k per year on computer hardware and software are finally over.
I have a 5 year plan: I will continue to run my old software and windows 98 on my current 5 systems for at least 5 more years.
As far as new systems go I'm thinking that I might get a Mac now that they are unix based and can network with windows.

It seems that the computer industry is a victim of it's own success. There finally doesn't seem to be a need to get a faster, bigger or more feature rich system. The standard gigahertz and up speed, cdrw, 256meg memory etc. is plenty for all the needs most will ever have. Of course, I am sure new versions of operating systems will try to bog down these computers so we will need more powerful ones. I am not biting. That being said, I do like my laptop's winxp pro os. Of course, this type of performance was promised me when I bought Win95.

Although the prediction has legs... On a personal level I feel fortunate that I can switch idenities and become "Brushman" at the drop of a hat, without flipping a single button or plugging in anything except my projector. Now the "gumint" can't touch that. Yes, it is nice to have my PC, I compare it to any other tool in my cabinet and would never allow "it" to rank over the other tools that have really made me money. My Mac, is a heavy favorite which is more of a golden fun gadget and very useful for clean up work at the fine art print level. For real power...There is nothing like a brush to make the day bloom like a garden of fresh beeeegonia's. Be it 1-shot, a tube of oil or a mess O' acrylics, you just can't get a better color display and the only hard drive, CPU that is needed dwells within the skull.
