I bought a great new book a few days ago... it was about the art of matte painting. Thats the paintings they used to do on glass to extend or create fantastic worlds in the movies.

With the coming of the digital age it is fast becoming a lost art, at least in the tradional sense.

Kinda sounds familiar doesn't it.

The book celebrated the wonderful things achieved over the last century and the masters who created the wonderful art shown.

There were many frank comments and opinions throughout the book.

It cronicled the advancement of the business and the many innovations and improvements each successive generation achieved. This is what the business was all about.

And the digital revolutions are changing the industry the most yet and the fastest too.

Some of the masters simply quit... refusing to change with the times. Some were bitter about new folks just entering the industry, and not at all accepting of the new ways of doing things. Some moaned that the work seen now is not as good as what came before... in the good old days.

But some of the best adapted their hard earned skills and knowledge to this wonderful medium. The took some of the new guys and the new tools under their wing to create some stunning new artwork and new ways to do traditional art.

THe end result is shown on the screen in many new films.... stuff they could only dream of before... and with a precision they couldn't imagine.

To be sure there are many new geeks who are working in the field who don't understand the basics of design, color, or many other necessary ingredients.

But there are also the new masters of this wonderful medium. Some old folks who have successfully made the transition... and some new folks who have known no other way of doing things.

The end result is progress, and a lot of great work in the future. Just think of where the advancements will take us.

The parallels to the sign industry were fascinating to me.

And just like the movie business, I'm excited about the future of the sign business with the blend of our new found technologies and the wonderful skills passed on by the masters of old.
