I came accross a site on the web the other day which sells signs made of fiberglass. They claimed that it is more durable and (obviously) more impact resistant than HDU. Anyone know much about it and where to find such a substrate. Sounds like something hard to blast and extra-hazardous too.

Sandblast fiberglass?? Best way, short of playing Russian Roulette with an automatic pistol, to destroy your health & lungs! I'd rather be Javalin catcher on a Track Team!

Yeah Si, It does sound formidable don't it. I was thinking the same thing. Wonder how they do it? Think I'll stick with wood, stone and HDU...and glass and ceramic tiles.

Yeahhhhh. .. . that's the stuff Joe Cieslowski (Connecticut Woodcarvers Gallery) brought to my shop last March. It is awesome stuff for signs. BUT, you have to don the respirator, face mask, gloves, long sleeves to work with it. The fiberglass is lofted into a polymer that is very close to 18 pound HDU. Nasty, nasty stuff to work with. It is made by MANTEX. It is called Ultratex Signboard. I think Joe said they stopped the sign marketing because no one wanted to work with something that bad. I have an enclosed walk-in sandblasting booth and use aluminum oxide. After blasting just a few pieces of this stuff, which was extremely hard, I had to take 300 pounds of alum. oxide outside to wash out all the fiberglass particles, spread it out on a tarp to dry and return it to my booth. I did this TWICE. MANTEX is in Imlay City, MI 800-666-2689 or (810)721-2100 or, e-mail sales@mantex.net for a brochure.
