Interesting you ask this question. Not more than a week ago, I built a new computer. A "screemer".

Processor> Intel P4 1.8GHz
Main Board> Intel D850GB socket480
Hard drive> 80GB
Hard drive> 20GB
Ram> 512MB "Rambus"
Video> ATI 64MB "Radeon" w/TV in/out
Power supply> 320W
CD> 48X
CD> 6X-8X-24X recorder
CD> DVD
Flopy> 3.25
Cooling fans> 5 (12V ea.)
Ports> #2 LPT (278, 378)
Case> ATX form factor

I hope this helps in choosing your next computer. Just because you have a fast processor like; 2.0GHz, thats 2 Giga-Hertz, and which is 2000Hz.,
doesn't mean you'll have a fast machine. There are alot more variables to consider.

Processors> I use Intel. The thing to look for is "Bus" speed, measured in hertz (Hz.) The faster the better. This is the rate in which the processor "talks" to the main board (Motherboard) Another thing to look for is dual channel memory support.

Main boards> There are many types with an assortmant of features. The things to look for are; a fast system bus, ultra-fast disk support, AGP(video), max. RAM amount, Processor compatibility for higher speeds. I usually stay away from the mother boards that have everything built-in.(video,sound,nic)

Memmory> The more the better. Also faster is better. Theres so many to choose from: PC600, PC800, SDRAM, DRAM, Rambus...

I build machines strickly for graphics with fast video, and lots of memmory. I use 2 LPT ports so I can use the scanner and plotter at the same time without switching. Which by the way, is a very easy upgrade. I've been building them since the eighties on old machines like the "8008", and the 2-eighty-sixs, and the 3-eighty-sixs. At present I have about six computers, and three laptops, and countless parts. If anyone would like me to build them a fast computer, considerably cheeper than the stores, please let me know.

On a further note; does anyone need a P4 1.5GHz. Intel processor? I seem to have an extra one.
Network cards, PCI, I have about 12 or 15 of them. LPT ports, ISA, I have about five of them.
ATI Rage128 AGP video card #1ea. Slot one PIII 400MHz and 233MHz processors, one of each. Creative Labs AWE64 sound card, 1 ea. Two sets of PC speakers. Countless IDE cables. Countless Main boards. A 8 Port network Hub, and 600' of CAT5 cable. Power cables 20ea. Power supplies 5ea. CD drives various speeds 4ea.

Boy, I should open up a computer store....
