I am considering purchasing a Gerber Edge
and would like to know the life span of the
print head. I have a PC-60 colorcamm and
you can scratch the print head with a wrinkle
in the ribbon. They are darn soft! Will make
someone a real steal of a deal on the colorcamm
if anyone's interested. I mean cheap!

Hi Roy.

The life expectancy of a Gerber EDGE's printhead will vary widely from unit to unit; depending on a number of factors...number of hours printing, type of printing you do predominantly, using proper (factory in most cases) settings, keeping it clean, etc., etc.

I have seen very few printheads fail within the first 12 months of ownership...more like 18-24 months would be typical.

18 - 24 months is also about what I had expected. I'm on month 22 with no sign of trouble. I did need a new power supply last month & got it overnighted after tech support diagnosed it through a few minutes troubleshooting on the phone. Thanks to my service contract, I just paid about $50 freight.

I had a colorCamm for a month before I sent the that boat anchor back to Roland (NO OFFENSE bOB WHEREVER YOU ARE [Smile] [Smile] )

Roy,

Our print head went within 12 months, but our edge II was a demo unit so I attributed it to that, under warranty it was replace by gerber, No matter what keep you warranty intact and you'll be fine.

Oh by the way when gerber goes into your machine they GO THROUGH it. I got mine back with a newer main board new hood lifts as well as a new head. They replace anything that even remotley looks worn.

Sorry to hear of your Roland nightmare, you will find many a happy Edge users here

I now sell and teach about the Gerber EDGE, but in "my previous life", I was a customer for 7 years. I saw an EDGE run from 1994 to the year 2000 when I left and it was still the original printhead.

Remember, the EDGE use Heat AND Pressure to fuse the foil, so make sure that those material settings are correct!

If you print alot, count on replacing it in say 2 years to maintain optimum print quality!

I think it makes a lot of difference if it is an Edge 1 or an Edge2. The OLD posts on the 4Edgetalk.com forum had LOTS of discussions on print head life. The Edge 2 used with a lot of 600 dpi work seemed to fail quicker. As for myself, my 1996 Edge 1 was just BARELY starting to show signs of head failure, so I sent it in last spring for the "overhaul" while we were on vacation, and before the machine became ineligible for the Gerber Service Contract. They replaced the Print Head and a few minor things, and tweaked things up and it just hums along. I was told the overhaul with print head replacement could run about $2000.00 without the service contract. (Last Spring's price). I decided to keep the ole reliable and take my chances rather than buy a new machine just so I could pay for the service contract again. Time will tell if my gamble was a good one. Good Luck.
