Ken & Brad...I haven't tried the Kandy colors or pearls, but my favourite paint for use on vinyl or SignGold is automotive basecoat/clearcoat. Been using it for about 5 years now and have not had any problems at all.

With all the different types of paint out there along with all the different types of vinyls, mylars, polyesters etc. this is one of those questions that a simple yes or no won't cover completely. My experience with automotive paints and vinyls would have me say yes you can do it. Of course there is always that combination that won't work. I have used candies ( lacquers cause thats whats layin around here ) over the "chrome" mylar for years. You can get some really neat effects out of it. I had a race car customer who wanted "red chrome" numbers on his car, this was in 87. I couldn't find a supplier so I painted chrome mylar with candy red laq, cleared it with two part urethane. The numbers ended up weighing what seemed like a couple of pounds but they went on the car fine and held up with no problems at all. My son does custom painting on helmets and is always mixing in "chrome", holographs, carbon fibers and staight vinyl in his work. They end up getting clear coated with urethane with no problems. The only problemwe have noticed was when he put a coat of HOK intercoat clear over a two layer sponsor decal. The top layer started raising up and bubbling real bad. I told him to leave it alone and wait til it dried and push it back down ( actually I thought it was history ). When it dried it laid back down all by itself. I'm sure if we keep on we will manage to screw something up As far as the SignGold goes, I would DEFINATELY experiment on a scrap piece first.

The same goes for me as with George. I have used Candies over Reflective and both Chrome and Gold Mylar for a dozen years for use on race cars and customs. I once did a sign on MDO using aluminum leaf and Candies and cleared in Dulux..... Experimenting is part of my life, doing strange things with paint and other things have always interest me. In the sixties I used to cut out those Gold foiled christmas card thingies and size them to motorcycle tanks after they were painted then clear them with lacquer. Urethane works the same way as lacquer or straight enamel and coating them is easy if you use common sense and take your time. The key to any custom job is patience..........
