Reports show that CCA might/is planned, to be removed from residential use by 2004. The EPA has yet to come up with evidence that concludes it seriously harmfull to society. Tree huggers of course are, supporting this action, are stabbing theirselves in the back, by causing higher tree consumptions using other methods of treating such as ACQ (possibly the planned replacement), or extreme higher usage with non-treated lumbers, or still yet huge energy and chemical consumption making that goofy vinyl product, that I'm already sick of looking at.

My personal observation on CCA.... I have used it for many years (when the arsenic content was much higher than at present). Every home on our street has a deck made of it. We live directly above a lake in which all drainoffs enter. Over 17 years, we have been raising health fish, wildlife is abundant, and bugs live directly on it surfaces and it's leached in soils. I live in a land of many large lakes which nearly all have many docks constructed of it, and people are dragging record bass from its leachings. Granted, don't eat the stuff, and wear a mask while cutting it, and don't burn it, but we have an enormous amount of it in our society, and only random claims of illness.......... Again, these are just my observations. My claim is that one trip from the bugman to our house, is much more threatening.

Around here they are tearing down playgrounds because of the "dangerous wood". This weekend someone torched a 10 yr old wooden playground about 10 miles from here. No one knows who did it or why.

People with nothing better to do are on a mission to save us from all possible risk! I wish they would go bother the health supplement industry and leave the rest of us alone.

Hi Jack,
It sounds like there is a lot more noise about CCA timber in the US than here, I haven't heard of any phasing out of CCA but I know that the manufacturers/treaters of the stuff have had to pick up their act quite substantially.
The main concern I had heard was that sites used in the past for treating the stuff had become sterile and a considerable hazard from the leeching that had taken place.
Mike, if memory serves me correctly CCA is the abbreviation for copper chrome arsenic. Used for treating softwoods to make them less prone to rot and insects.

That is correct David. The industry is going through a said voluntary change to be completed by Dec 2003 in the US. I don't think that Canada is complying, and since they mfg a lot of it, I'm sure they will be under tough scrutiny on exporting it to us. I would believe that safe standards at treating sites should be looked at seriously, but overall banning of it after 30 years of use is simply another fleecing of America. A term we use here a lot lately. Many of the controllers just trying to justify their positions. Their is always something on their agenda for overreaction. A for instance: I live in an area that was heavily mined for lead ore around the turn of the century. The EPA has over the last 5 years been replacing yards with new soils on at least 20,000 area properties at the expense of our taxholders. The lead came from the soil originally, it is still there. Now they are stirring it up again, re-exposing it again to our children. They don't remove flower gardens or the areas around tree roots where kids play with their toys and there is exposed soils, but rather the yard where close contact to their skin is unlikely anyway. One pediatric physician from here in town, told me that he has checked the lead levels of over 1200 children, as he was required, and only found one instance with a reasonably questionable amount of lead containment, and it was not at a dangerous level. It is simply our bureaucratic government manifesting itself again, while screwing the taxpayer and the consumer.....

The ironic thing is that half of these bureaucrats and workers are puffing on cigarettes while this topic rages...but it's still legal!!
