Driving home from Mars on Sunday, I was thinking about all the great panels I had seen. Some people took their's home, others swapped them with fellow letterheads. Then I got thinking that since Letterville is the letterhead meet that never ends, maybe we could do our own panel swap.

This could give everyone a chance to play, get a panel from another letterhead from somewhere else in the world and share in some of the fun that goes on at a live meet.

If you thinks this is a silly idea, fine. But if anyone is interested, I'd be happen to organize it.

I've been to a couple Letterhead Christmas parties where we've made gifts for each other and exchanged them in a secret santa sort of way and I think this could work here. Names would be drawn from a hat. The first would send a panel to the next drawn, and so on. You would know who you are making your panel for but would have no idea who's making one for you until it shows up on your doorstep!

Give me your thoughts everyone. Some things that would need to be worked out are-

1. Is there enough interest in Letterville to do it.
2. I think a theme is needed. Obviously most of the Mars panels had an alien/spaceship etc. theme to them.
3. Time frame. I was thinking making the due date after Christmas. Maybe the end of January or even into February. This would give you lots of time to put something together, get through the holidays, and add some excitement to the middle of winter.
4. Think very seriously about joining in. If you are on the list, you have to do the panel or it would mess the whole system up!
5. I like the idea of everyone doing a mini step-by-step of their project. This could give us all a little insight to how others go about similar projects and perhaps we could learn from each other.
6. I also like the idea of trying to learn something new with your panel. Haven't tried to gold leaf yet? Now's your chance! Don't use paint? Maybe cut out a paint mask and try to paint your panel!

I'd like to hear all your thoughts. When it's all said and done, I'll set up a page of all the completed panels (and step-by-steps) [Smile]

I see this as maybe even an annual event.

So, who's in on the Big Letterville Panel Swap?

Anyone? [Big Grin]

Sounds great to me. Never having been to a meet yet, I would like to start getting in on the fun at another level, using experience gaind in Letterville to try some new stuff.

Define panel. I always hear about the panels at meets, but since I never see them, are there consistent sizes, substrates, or messages? You mentioned the theme, but does everyone letter "LETTERHEADS" or "MARS 2002" or their own shop logo?

Hi Doug!

A theme is just that. Just a theme. Something to get your creative juices flowing. In Mars, the pinheads were doing panels with spaceships mixed in with their flourishes. Dennis Gerathy had one of his antique signs that looked like an old b-movie poster. They could say anything, but most were related to the theme of the meet. As far as panel material or sizes go, it could be on anything you've got around the shop. Even a piece of masonite or something like that since these are intended to be interior pieces. I'd consider carving something since that is what I'm interested in. I suppose you'd also have to consider shipping in this circumstance. Obviously, the lighter the better if cost is a concern for you.

Not really any rules, just have fun!

<------ First off, I gotta get a new Pic !!!!!!!

Terry
I like the idea!!!!!!!! Count me in. As for a "Theme". Letterville is a community or city in it's self. Why not use
"Letterville... A Community of Craftsman"
as the theme????

Just a thought....

I think maybe we should have a max. size limit though. Not sure how big to make it.

Troy, that is a new pic! (to us) you could be twenty years smarter now & we'll never know, from this meet anyway.

As kids, we had grab bag gifts at school & an approximate value was set, to result in a feeling of equity for everyone. I'd hate to get Terry's carved sign if I just stuck an edge print on Masonite (not that I would), & Terry might be less then stoked as well, even though a nice design could be many hours in the making.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses! I wouldn't want to limit or put a value on a panel. How do you do that anyhow? If digital printing is your thing, make the coolest digital print you can. Same with vinyl or whatever. I don't think anyone's going to sign up if they don't intend to put they're heart into it. On the other hand, I have seen exactly what you are worried about. I've seen hours been put into a project just to get a hunk of crezon with a first name sandblasted out of it! [Confused]
That's why I want people to really think about this before signing up. Don't do it if you're not going to REALLY do your thing with it. And if you're joining in, you have to understand that you could get just about anything with such a broad range of people in Letterville.

I'm off on a camping trip for the long weekend, so everyone talk amongst yourselves and I hope to come back to a great response to this!

Have a great weekend! [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

Just a question ...
Besides cost, would there be a problem sending something across the border(either way) as far as, What is is called, "Duty" or "Duty Tax" or something along those lines????
Just Curious.

Very cool idea, Terry!
Put me down on your list.
I recently had to set up an account with Canada Customs to import/export and believe that "duty"
is paid on sold items and the fee is based on the dollar value of the item sold plus a "broker fee".
I woder how we could do this Gift Exchange on an International level?

Great idea Terry! Something else I would like to see is panels on the Auction. Wouldn't it be great to bid on a panel done by your favorite Letterhead or PinHead? Dave The Letterman gave us a panel for the Auction in Mars, but I'm not sure I want to let it go.

Good idea! I'll do an original Ponchatoula cardboad box Marks-a-Lot panel for some lucky Letterhead. May even throw in the broom stick and thumb tacks to install it with.

Seriously, this sounds like a lot of fun on both the giving and receiving end.

Mike..Ya mean ya don't want ANYTHING with quicky sticky vinyl crap on it???

I know that each of these pics are far inferior to hand painted items but they are some of my humble works done on and in vinyl.

I don't think I am entitled to be included in a venture such as this Mike, so I won't be throwing my hat into the ring.

Thanks for your supportive comments Mike..

CYA on chat where you are known as LynnCDoyle!!!! [Smile]

By the way Mike..if you want to display anything that you WOULD be willing to accept just e-mail me a pic and I will be more than willing to post it for you...no strings attached.. [Smile]
