Rob...When you first start up mIRC there is a box that appears with the picture of the guy who wrote the program, close it.
Next box is the one where you connect to the server of your choice. You can either scroll down the list until you see several "webnet" servers and connect to one of those servers....OR you can go to "add" and add a server. To do that you click on ADD at the top right and in the next box that pops up you type WEBNET where it says "description" and type irc.webnet.com where it says "IRC Server". The default port of 6667 is OK. Now click OK and the list of servers will now include the one named WEBNET. Fill in your personal info at the bottom of the window (nickname etc.) and click "CONNECT to IRC SERVER".
Once you are connected a new window will appear titled "IRC Channels folder". Under the words "enter name of channel to join" type in #letterville and hit "ADD". This will add #letterville to the list of channels. At that point you highlight #lettervile in the list and click on "JOIN" and you will be there.
I only use #letterville so I have no need for all of the other channels that are automatically listed so I just delete all the ones that are above #letterville and every time I log on it is the first one in the list.
Once you have connected to the IRC network and jioned #letterville, you might get a message from "chanserv" or "nickserv" that the nickname you have chosen already belongs to someone else and asking you to identify yourself. In order to do that, AND to make sure that no one else can come along later and use your nickname you need to register that nickname. To do that you use the "staus" window and type in these words /msg nickserv register nickname (where I have used the word "password" you need to actually enter a real password). Once you do that you will possibly be asked to re-enter the information, including your e-mail address. Do that and you will have a registered nickname, so that in the future, when requested to identify your self you just type in /nickserv identify password (again using the actual password).
CYA tonight on mIRC Rob!!!!
