So I get a job for a couple of 4x8's, right? Big names (they don't have any ) and age have eliminated my purchasing MDO, right? So I order comp board. 6mm (1/4) but wait, they no longer carry 6mm. Had 5mm in LA though. Received the boards and they look 7mm to me with razor sharp edges. I digress. This sign requires a fully coated background. I don't have nor can I get one shot quickly so I coated with acrylic DTM (direct to metal) paint. First I find that the stuff has NO leveling capabilities. Then I find that the color requires minimum 2 coats. Better with three. Bumpy, bumpy. I was able to successfully Frog Tape the color edges and coat the second color. Nice job, very crisp lines. Next I apply the vinyl grahics. Very hot day- 103. After completing this I found that one color won't stick well. Maybe it is an old roll? I lay awake last night thinking up ways to get the offending letters down. Spray glue? Nova Acrylic gloss overcoat? This morning its down tight. Had to cool off I guess. This is not a happy experience. Next time? Prebuy mdo? Stock more one shot? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I still use MDO in Mendo because only wood products are legal in the historic district. Other than that, I'm using a lot of that aluminum sandwiched stuff and it's light and seems to hold up fine. I even tried some of the panels printed by 365. They turned out great, but I sure like having some touch up color if anything gets a scratch or nick. I've received the fully printed 4x8's from 365. I think they get $200 for shipping though. I got five in a package for that price.
