A few days ago I got a call to come letter a boat. This was a trailer boat in someones yard. Easy access. Do it all standing on the ground. The image of the previous lettering that had been painted over showed through. He showed me photos ans said he wanted it to look just like that again. The former lettering looked like what I used to see beginners do. Bad letters, poor spacing, snapped terminals, and bright red letters with a heavy black shade. I suggested some ways to clean it up and after a couple minutes I gave him a price that he agreed to and said he wanted it to look like the photos.
By the next day, I called and told him I'd prefer him to find someone else to do this. I said I want a clientele that is wanting me to do my best, and this was far from it.
I want to always work with people that try to do their best as well as me trying to put my heart into what I do. By cutting corners, are we cheating ourselves?

This morning I heard a tribute to Tony Bennett, who passed away yesterday, spoken by a radio personality who had known him. Tony Bennett was closer to my parents’ generation, but I have more recently come to appreciate some artists of their generation. He spoke about what a class act Mr. Bennett was and how he would only perform songs that he considered to be of the highest quality material. His legacy is one of a highly respected, very successful performer and a class act. I see clear parallels here. I’m inspired by people who do their very best at their craft. I need to pay attention to those people because I have at times wavered a little form doing my best and I never have a good feeling about that, even if I made a few bucks.

I always start out trying to do my best. They seldom turn out that way. I was thinking about the situations where it becomes clear from the beginning that I'd be doing less than my best.

Rick, I'm sure you do. I didn't intend to imply otherwise.
I spoke to guy on the phone recently who is once again closing his shop. He said "the lawsuits are piling up". I always saw him as someone who cuts corners trying to rush the job out to make a quick buck.

I've never had a lawsuit. I wonder what that person does? I always want to make sure the customer gets more than what they ask for. I want to make sure they get the value for what they're spending. I want to treat their money as if it were mine. I'm glad that shop is closing.

Jer, If I do the truck stickers, I want to do my best with them. Design wise, materials, time to complete, etc. I'm not trying to sell carved and gilded to everyone. I just don't want those instant right now, casual case, snapped terminal jobs on a piece of scrap material that's been sitting in the corner for two years.
