Is the preferred glue an epoxy like West Systems or a urethane like Gorilla? I need to build up 1 1/2" to 3"

Hi Rick! Either glue will work, the urethane glue expands so you put it on fairly lightly and be sure to clamp the living daylights out of the two boards, with weight in the middle too. We will also screw the boards together in inconspicuous spots as much as possible, depending on the layout of the sign you are making. The epoxy is fine but it's very slippery so you need to be sure you have it in the right place and then it needs clamps too, just not as much as the urethane. One thing about the epoxy is that it is harder than the HDU so if you get some squeezing out of the edges it can be a little more difficult to sand it down without over doing it on the HDU. Both of them setup quickly so you have to work fast.

Hi Rick,

I epoxy a lot of HDU. I have had great results with West System Epoxy. A nice long working time makes it easy to work with.

I find Gorilla Glue a bit too messy with the glue expanding.

Apply the epoxy to both surfaces and paint it on fairly thin. If the two pieces your are epoxying start to "slide" around, then there is too much epoxy. Foamy brushes work well.

Best of luck,
Bob

I never trusted Gorilla Glue to laminate sheets. Love it for gluing edges together. Lay down a strip of wax paper along seam. Glue. Take multi tool and use the putty knife blade to skim off squeeze out.

I always used epoxy for laminating and never had a failure. Lay a bead around perimeter about an inch away from edge. Lay beads in stripes about 6 inches apart across the face. Clamp around edge. Set some gallon paint cans on top in the middle.
