I have a project that is giving me fits and none of us want that. Lady brings me boards that will become an A-frame. They are raw plywood and to help she coated them with Valspar pro exterior wood finish. I only have the phone fotos of the label she sent when I asked questions. It felt like some plastic surface, waxy and slimey when she brought them. I masked and coated with frog juice before I was to paint black as requested. The Frog juice took two days to dry and dried really weird, skinning and uneven. But it did dry, so I coated out with one shot black with flattener. That took two days to dry (in the sun). As it was dry but blotchy I sprayed a matte black I had in a bomb. That dried in a day. I am about to letter now. I understand fat over lean...I get that, but what is happening? I looked on the beloved internet to see what was the base in the stuff but there is NO information from Valspar and of course calling Loews is useless . I did try that but only got more song titles I never want to hear again. Do you suppose this stuff is alcohol base or some kind of alkaloid? Anyone....anyone?

Could it be a waterproofing or sealer product? I tried using Thompson's Water Sealer on the edge on MDO years ago (2 coats) and it took forever for the paint to dry. Put 2 coats of it on a deck surface once and it took forever for the second coat to dry. Just a thought.

Gerald - how big are the boards ? if I had the similar plywood (an old MDO sign comes to mind) in my shop, I would just make new boards and finish them the way I thought fit and call it a day. banging your head on a dead horse will do nothing but frustrate the dickens out of you and make your hair smelly.

I appreciate John's thoughts...however these boards were 3/4 plywood with 3/4 x 3/4 pine edges. Waaayyy more work than I wanted to give away.
The water-sealer idea is probably right. The paint did dry after three days. I was able to letter on top of that. It was fun trying to clean off edges of painted area. I had a couple of holidays to wipe, but Laq thinner turns it into sticky mess.
