I bought a Scuhmacher SE-1052 battery charger for $50 ( probably at Walmart ) and it worked fine for a year. Today at -1 degree, it doesn't work!
So I went on line, and everybody says its JUNK, throw it away! I got what I paid for! OK, I get that.
So, I opened it up to see what was inside the case. A big thick square metal thingy with copper wire wrapped around and around and some wires.
So, 110v from the wall outlet comes into a toggle switch for 2-10-and 50 amp charging. Then three wires come out of the toggle switch into the big thick square thingy with the copper wire wrapped around. Next a wire comes out of that big thick square thingy to a meter to show the viewer how the much that battery is being charged.
Then a wire comes out of the meter to what looks like a lego block. It looks solid, don't know why it is there, but then the wire comes out of the other side of the lego block to the pinch cables. One of wires to the pinch cable is grounded in the case.
I don't think there is $10.00 worth of anything inside the case.
The motor hums when I plug it in. So that tells me the current is passing through the toggle switch into the big square thingy with the copper wires.
So the current is either leaving the big thick square thingy, or it isn't.
Then the current is either going through the meter, or not
Then there is the little lego block that the wire goes into, then out of to the pinchers. So that is either the problem or not.
There isn't a part number on the little lego block thingy ( which I guess could have a fuse or something buried inside that can't be seen)
Nothing looks out of place, all the wires are on tight, nothing loose. Nothing looks burnt up, and there is no smell of an electrical short....it should work. I'm stumped!
Should I throw the charger away? Can it be fixed?
Some you you guys here are really smart solving these problems. Thanks

Sorry, I can't help with the charger problem but I definitely enjoyed reading your description of the "guts" of the thing.

Hey Dave. You could always convert that thing to a redneck defibulator. One clamp on each nipple, and hit that toggle switch. Heck, if your heart has already stopped, and there's nothing else available...what's there to lose ? If the contraption works, nobody will ever complain, but you might get hailed as a hero, and a fast-thinkin' genius to boot!

Dave, I bought an SSC-1000A Schumacher charger for $49 and when I received this small plastic charger I wasn't very impressed however, it's proved to be the best charger I ever had. It works flawlessly every time, works on all types of batteries and won't overcharge. I'd suggest you throw that one out and replace it with an SSC-1000A

Don't you have a neighbor with jumper cables? I had to join two jumper cables last Friday to reach my Toyota truck battery to a 1999 Kenworth log truck batteries in my shop. Log truck had dead batteries. I started up my truck, jumped into the Kenworth and it started right up, smoke and all. Sounded and smelled like this,,,,, Kenworth

Did you ever have a flashlight that didn't work, and you knew the bulb was good. But no matter how many times you took the batteries out and put them back in, it just wouldn't light up. Probably a simple fix...a bad connection somewhere...if you could figure it out. You hate to spend $10 bucks on a new flashlight because the one you have should work. That is my frustration.
I didn't mean to give anyone the impression we were in dire need of getting a car started.
Yes, I have 4 adult kids within a mile radius. We have 6 sets of jumper cables plus a power jumper pack between us. We are covered . I have access to several vehicles, including 3 road bikes, a fat bike, a cruiser and seven 20" kid bikes in the garage, oh yeah, there is a 24" bike (grand kids found it in the ditch, so we fixed it up )...and the city bus stop is a block away. Transportation is not the issue here.
I didn't want to throw away a $50 charger if there was a simple fix for it. Some folks here in Letterville work around electrical signs and solve bigger problems with transformers, ballasts, and neon, so I thought they might know a fix for the charger.
You're a sweetheart for thinking of us! LOVED that truck link, LOL

Don't cha have of of those electrical things you put into a wall outlet to see if it has power? I'd see if it would light up with the charger hooked up. Maybe the clamps are not receiving the juice?
