I found out you can legally free download adobe illustrator CS2.
I know its a old version, but everyone is using adobe illustrator now days, from what I'm being told local.
I understand its about $40 each month to use the newest updating A.I.
I just trying to learn on a good program like A.I. I got laughed at twice today for mentioning the word Corel at two vinyl rap/graphic artist shops
Ive been using a photo-shop type program and it wont export /save a file in Vector File . So I can take a scan disc to a shop and get a paint mask or vinyl print made

I can understand the AI users laughing at Corel users. They have a tendency to look down on folks that aren't in their "cult".
I never had a client look down his nose at anything I created in Corel Draw.

I tried to "export" my saved sign designs in .EPS Vector file and it wont work. They show as a PNG file even though I exported and chose .EPS file
I dont know why It wont make them vector file
I went to a vinyl wrap graphic design guys shop today to see if I could get a paint mask made and if he'd sub out to me to do vinyl or printed vinyl, and he said everything on my scan disc was not vector files and he cant convert them. He said it would be easier for him to just redesign my designs
Yeah , I know I dont know wtf i'm doing

Rick B....What program did you use to create the original files?
If you wish to, shoot them over to me and I'll see if I might be able to help.
We just arrived at our Mexico home this evening and have a bunch of stuff to set up. but I always have time to play around with difficult files.

It does layers, and all kinds of stretch, destort, out line font, shadow type stuff to use. or learn and forget how to use
I dont know if it is exactly the same as using corel or A.I. or even close to the same. But I dont want to have to relearn stuff because these graphic art programs work different

The Adobe vs. Corel attitude is like Mac vs. pc. We also saw it years back with Volvo owners, but that has switched to Prius. You can still get there in a VW, but it might not be as comfortable a ride.

Rick B, if Illustrator CS2 is free I would download it and use it. It sounds like the problem you are having is expecting an image program to handle vectors. he newer versions of Photoshop can create vectors but if I bring an Illustrator file into Photoshop it doesn't maintain the vectors. Any version of Illustrator above CS2 will open CS2 files so you should have no problem saving eps files for other shops to open.
Edit: There are lots of You Tube videos available to help you learn Illustrator. To do basic vector drawing integrated with images is not that intense.
PS. I am one that uses Illustrator but has never looked down on those that use Corel. I learned on Illustrator and would not switch. Those that learned Corel would be equally foolish to switch. I've seen incredible work done by Corel users in Letterville. To laugh at their work because they use Corel would be ludicrous.

Rick, I have used Illustrator for years and it is a great program. I have had a small one person commercial sign business for over 40 years, all the while with a foot in the door of the advertising world. Being able to create, exchange and modify files in that environment necessitated being on their platform.
That being said, I currently have Illustrator Creative Cloud 2017 as well as Photoshop. I do not like that they are now a monthly subscription only ($20 each) but that's life.
To answer your question, yes I would say to get CS2, it is a wonderful tool, it will allow you to do just about everything the current version does pertaining to vector art.

Not all eps files are vectors... If it starts as a bitmap it will stay as one.

OK, it looks like some descriptive explanation is needed here. I thought that a vector was a point to point outline of an 2-D object. Some points direct the outline to curve and some a straight line. A square would require four points (at the corners). A bitmap on the other hand, is a "map" of the surface of the object. The square would be a grid of pixels. The pixels can be different colors and dictate the surface of the object. the more pixels the better the definition of the object. A vector doesn't mind increased size as it just moves the points in relation to each other. A bitmap on the other hand (lots of hands here) is very sensitive to size as size defines the amount of pixels available.
In flexi 8.6 I have found that sometimes a saved vector, or a exported vector becomes a bitmap(by any other name). I think that is what you are experiencing here. What gives, guys?

Gerald, It depends on what you are doing. In Illustrator, if you want to retain vectors, you save or save as. You can save as an Illustrator file, an eps, svg, or PDF. In Illustrator, if you EXPORT a file, you are saving it as a bitmap file. It converts all colors to bitmaps and the vectors are eliminated. You can export Illustrator files in any of the bitmap formats, TIFF, JPG, PNG, GIFF, etc.
And Bruce is right. You can open a bitmap file into Illustrator and save it as an AI or EPS file, but it is still a bitmap. An AI or EPS file can contain both bitmap objects and vector objects but as soon as you export the file, all objects within the file becomes a single bitmap object.

I remember several years ago when there was supposedly a way to download it for free. It didn't work for me and I tried several times. The validation code didn't work. Try to download it and see if you manage to complete the install. It might be the end of the story. I use Coreldraw but learned on Adobe Illustrator in tech school. I use Coreldraw. No regrets.
