which do you prefer for exterior use... triangle coatings sophisticated finishes or modern masters metal effects ? I've used both with mixed results.
thanks for any reply

In the reactive finishes we only use the iron with rust effects these days. We use Modern Masters. I heard they bought out Sophisticated Finishes which was owned by Triangle Coatings (at least in Canada). This paint works awesome. The copper and brass finishes were too unpredictable and even the clear sealer didn't stop further effects from happening. Now we use Modern Masters gold or copper - always at least three coats for the deepest and richest colours. We then fake the weathering effects with the appropriate colours of greens using a sponge, brushes and rags. That way we get what we want and it stays that way for the duration.

I don't use their primer or sealer. I used to use their sealer on the reactive copper and brass but found they still reacted over time. Plus the sealer is shiny which I don't care for.

dan, I appreciate your taking the time to respond. when you say "don't use their primer or sealer" are you saying you use them but not modern master brand, or none at all ? I've found that not using sealer lessens the effect over time.

Have you tried Ronan's Aqua Leaf metallic paints. I prefer them for larger areas. You will need at least 3 coats but the paint goes a long way and is easy to work with. Just don't make the mistake I made and recoat too soon. Although the paint feels very dry I was told you need to let it sit overnight before recoating. I've got a couple of signs with bubbles in the gold.

I agree Jean. I had excellent results with the gold. Like magic that third coat finally looks like gold using Ronan's product.

thanks for all replies. when I use reactive metal surfacers as my bkgds, I'm looking for the varied metallic, patinas and rust effects...not a solid "color" as paint will provide.

I've used quite a bit of Ronan Aqua leaf lately, too. I have not had a problem with recoating after an hour or so. Maybe its the relatively drier climate here.

I'm going to try the Modern Masters rust look soon.

I'll have to look at it as well. I've been using Sculpt Nouveau products.
