I have a customer that called me, and it seems that their sign (internally illuminated sign cabinet) was hit by a car. I looked at it, and the bottom reveal is destroyed, but the sign is no longer level...there is little damage to the cabinet, other than some scuffed paint and a slightly bent vandal face...
I tore it apart, and no welds are broken, and I don't see any reason that it should be off level...
Here is the thing. It has a match mount plate, and I'm wondering if I can put shims on the one side and bring it back to level, or is this a bad idea?

I don't see a problem as long as the shimming isn't too sever. After all, when installing a pipe mount sign where they sink threaded rod into a concrete base, they use bolts above and below the plate to make the pole plumb.

This does not sound on the level! OK. Shim it. Had to hang way too many front clips on GM cars from the 40s to not know that secret.
I had a sign can that was on a pole. Some bozo hit the pole backing up and the whole thing was off a few clicks. The owner called me and asked if I knew anyone who could bend it back straight. I called a tow truck guy I knew and for $50 he hooked up and tugged it back up to verticle, but with a chain block and tackle hooked up to his truck with outriggers. It took a few tugs and slowly it came back to where it was needed. A year later, some other bozo hit it again. Same repair needed, but with the addition of some bullocks or poles around the base to prevent it further.
