When using supplies for a job ie, Rapid Remover, eraser wheels, etc. Do you charge the customer cost or do you mark it up? How much mark-up do you use?

Rob...I know a lot of automotive shops, when itemizing billings, add a "shop supplies" cost. I'd guess they probably double their cost.

Personally, I never did that. I just priced the job so that I made a decent profit after factoring in time, materials and supplies.

You mention "removal" supplies.

I always charged by the hour for removal of vinyl or paint. The was no negotiation on the hourly rate and it included the cost of supplies like Rapid Remover or Easy-Off. I don't know what the going rate would be today, but 9 years ago, before I retired, it was $60/hr for "removal". Repeat, "no negotiation" on that fee.

On miscellaneous supplies such as these we mark up 20%. On raw materials such as sheet goods, paint, vinyl, we double the cost.

I agree with both Dave and Jean.

I estimate removal by the hour, but I charge $75 per man hour. That's important because if I get a helper in, I pay him great money ($35 per hour) and I make a profit from his labor as well. Remover and other supplies in removal are not added in.

For supplies in sign making, sheet goods, I Mark up 200%.
