I need to make copy changes on an old interior sign that has dark stained wood backing with gold metal faced dimensional letters. Removing the old letters is going to damage the already damaged face, so I want to cover it with new material. It is one of about a dozen of these 2x6 ft signs. They are framed with ornate wood frames. I will cut the material to fit within the frame, overlaying the old backing. They don't all match exactly since there have been changes made over the years, so I don't need an exact match to the dark stained wood color. I have the lettering part handled.
I don't want to mess with staining wood and they are about 10 feet up on a wall so I would like to use something like the Pergo wood laminate flooring but I need it to be a solid piece 2x6 ft without seams in it. Wood wall paneling would work if I could find it in a close color but they all seem to have grooves. I may be able to laminate countertop laminate like Wilsonart to a piece of Dibond. It needs to be somewaht rigid since I would like to install it in place without removing the sign from the wall. Any ideas?

Something like black walnut, rosewood or Ebony would be expensive. I don't know other than a laminate like you mentioned. Staining isn't that bad once you get the hang of it.
