Working on a sign and my customer said he had a lot of old one shot with lead in it. Now that I'm ready for it, he checked and it's all dried up, so now I need to find a high quality paint.
Ray if your out there, which Porter paint have you been using? My search shows Permanizer, Acri-shield and Acri-Pro.

All dried up? Try cutting thru the skin on the top inside and I bet it is still good stuff. Worth a try!

Preston, they painted their own billboards for the last 40 years or so till switching to bag banners. These were cans that were opened a long time ago and used out of. Said they were dried up solid, and some of the cans were about to rust through the bottom. He's already trashed them so I can't go check.
Thank you Rodger, there's a lumber yard not far away that handles porter paints. If they don't have Acri-Shield, hopefully they can order some.
Acri-Shield says paint and primer in one. Do you not use a primer? I have a gallon of Jay Cookes. This is for HDU.

Unfortunately, Porter is no longer in business. They were bought out by Pittsburg and all the formulas have changed. I've still got some of the old stuff left and it was AcriShield.
I am now using Nova Color. It can only be purchased from the manufacturer in California. Just Google "Nova Color" and you can view all the colors and extras. The colors are pure acrylics and are named by regular artists names - Burnt Sienna, Cobalt Blue, etc. You have to mix to your specifications.
As far as I know, all the murals done at Letterheads 40 were done with Nova.
So far, I am very satisfied with them. The colors are intense and cover very well.

I recently did a job using PPG paints. The dark brown color blistered very badly when put outside. It is disappointing because PPG has come out with a fast drying latex called "Break Through" that dries really hard in just a couple of days - unlike typical latex that takes a month to cure. I haven't had time to research the product but after the blistering problem I am hesitant to use that manufacturer.

Well darn...dont really want to mix myself. Might go with Sherwin Williams, Genesis LV looks like is might work well and they can mix it to pms colors.

I've had good luck with Porter, & PPG< even after the re-formulation, Then again, I don't get the sun exposure or months of unbearable humidity that those of you in the SE or along the Gulf coast get ..........

www.novacolorpaint.com GREAT service but they do have to ship from California so it does take some time. But it is GREAT paint as it is thick and covers great. There are some problems people have had but it's usually because they order the wrong type. Call and get their literature sent to you especially the color chart (real blobs of paint) and READ it. There are opaques and transparents (for glazes). Make sure you check that!

I still have gallons of Porter after Gary Anderson stopped selling his Rhino paint. I called him and like others said it was Porter Acri-shield. I found a dealer near me that would order Porter so I bought some gallons of some good colors.
Sorry to hear Porter sold. That paint comes off a Mac water based quill just like One Shot on a regular quill, and with the same amount of hiding quality.
I just used some Nova paint on some HDU golf course tee signs. Since Porter is no longer it will be my go to paint as it covers well, holds up well, and the jars I have are all plastic. That is my main gripe with latex paint, the lids rust way too quickly and I'm always straining the rust specs out of it and having to move it into new containers. Some of the Porter colors I bought came with plastic lids & containers but only a few colors were like that.

Dave, PPG bought Porter years ago. Yes, it has been re-formulated since then, butI think most paints have been. We used to be able to buy Porter here in Canada, but a former chemist with PPG told me they decided against doing the required French labelling , probably because of the relatively small market & the fact that it would just compete with their lines. I have both Porter Acri-Shield & PPG SunProof here, & although I don't know this for sure, I suspect they are the very same paint .... just a different label. They smell the same, cover the same, & "feel" the same . And, the Porter I bought in Iron Mountain in 2009 seems to be exactly the same as the PPG I bought last month here, so I don't think there has been any large-scale re-formulation, although I'm sure there have been ingredients replaced. I noticed that blacks don't cover quite as well as they once did ..... I just add more tint.

Roger, you don't mean Iron Mountain, MI do you? Cuz that's where I got mine, at Bond Decorating. It was at least 6 years ago, probably more since I bought Porter paint.

That's correct, Dave. I would have bought more there but they didn't stock the exterior stuff in quarts. Had to buy in case lots. I generally drive through the UP once a year or so, although Iron Mountain is out of my way bit.
