I am trying to recreate a sign that a customer brought to me. I asked What the Font to identify the font, which they did. However the #1 is not correct and everyplace I have checked the font is not free. What the Font they identified is Delphin II probably I could use the one they said it is and cut the serif off the one to make it work but I still have the problem finding the font free someplace. Does anyone have free font web site they have had success with?

Many fonts are not free anywhere. Explain to the customer that the cost of the font will have to be added to their bill if they must match it. I have quite a few clients that then just say to use something close when they hear it will cost more.

Joy is right. Sometime you will simply not find a free version of a font, BY it's proper name. I've seen free fonts that are so close to a font that is not free and they rename it to avoid copy write infringement.

This brings up a topic along the same vein. What is really legal when using a font. Here's a scenario. Sign shop 1 needs one word for a sign in a particular font that he does not own. Of course it's illegal for sign shop 2 to send sign shop 1 a copy of the font. But what about sign shop 2 typing out the word, converting the font to outlines (curves for you Corel users) and sending the file to sign shop 1 for a small fee? In my thinking, this is no different than a graphic designer using fonts in a logo or design that they then sell to production shops.

That's a sticky deal now, too. Almost every font source, or graphics package (Flexi, Corel, etc.) will have their own names for some, if not all of the fonts.......especially free ones, or ones they just came up with.

And some of those......wow! Some of those new fonts look like someone pulled them out of their derrieres!......

If I don't already have the font in my collection and can't find it for free, I let the customer know what the cost of the font will be. They can then decide if they want to pay for that exact font or if something close will do. Sometimes, I ask them to contact the designer of their logo to see if they can provide it converted to curves.

You can always throw back at the customer to supply you with the font. Let them sit at the putor trying to download a "Free' font.

David, how many want the font for their own computer since they are paying for it?

Dave,

So far, no one has asked, although I'm sure the time will come!

Sometimes, I just figure it into the quote. Most of the ones I've run up against are in the $20 to $50 range. Of course, every now and then, it's part of a $200 family.

Don't know if you found it yet, Rob; but I googled the name and came up with a website called 'freefonts.com' ......that says they have it for free. ...like Ricardo said.

Imagine that.

And on my Flexi fonts list, it's shown as Dauphin.
