I've done 23 K. surface leaf a number of times, and am familiar with how it handles. I'm wondering if there's a difference between that and 24 K. Don't want to encounter any surprises. Thanks.

I would expect not. There's little difference in 19k Caplain gold & 23k, & the Caplain is mixed with Palladium, which is nowhere near as malleable. So, the differences between 23k & 24k should be un-noticeable.

I've worked with 24K and did not notice any difference other than the cost. I thought I could avoid tarnishing with 24K but it still tarnished. Some people claim gold leaf will not tarnish but it does in my neighborhood. I don't know why but I've used the same gold in Florida and NJ and the one in NJ remains good. But the Florida one tarnished.

I also haven't noticed a diference in 23 and 24 k gold.
Jean, It's probably not truly tarnish but more likely a build up of pollutants.
I am getting ready to re-gild some Gemini Letters I did about 8 years ago. The gold is coming off. I wondered why as even older signs using the same process and letters are just fine. Well I figured it out when I did an install of some vinyl door lettering at another customer just up the street. I had installed Gemini letters (not gilded) just a year ago at this site and I noticed that the sides of the letters were just filthy. It's a road that apparently gets a lot of airborne dust & dirt and the gold is being sandblasted off the letters. I'm going to spray a couple coats of automotive clear over the new gold.

Thanks for your reply Dave. But it is not pollutants build up. My only guess is it has something to do with the salt air, high humidity, high sulphor content in ground water combination. I've taken photos of the gold and sent them to the gold manufacturers and they don't know why it happens either.
