I think there are a lot of other variables, besides diet and programmed exercise, that affect our longevity and vitality.
One of the main things is the stress in many of our lives. People who live in a lot of those little villages, in many "primitive" countries, have very little of it in their lives. Many are pretty self-sufficient. We, many who live in large cities, are exposed to many different stresses, from many different sources....traffic, pollution, our job, relationships, etc.
Our environment can also play a large role in our overall health. Many who live in mountainous regions of Austria, Italy, Switzerland, etc. are used to walking or riding bicycles, almost everywhere they go. They have little pollution, a healthy diet, and their heart and lungs are in good condition from all the exercise. Contrast that, with those of us who drive or ride busses everywhere, have a sit-down job, and a diet that contains a lot of fast food and snacks.
I have a friend who lived in a town in Austria, for a few years. There was little industry and little pollution. He told me they lived on the 6th floor of a townhouse; walked up and down the steps, anytime they went anywhere. Everything in the town (stores, office, church, etc.) was in walking distance, so they did. Beef was rare and expensive; but what there was, was good with practically no fat. Their cattle was raised on mountainsides, and got a lot of physical exercise. They ate lots of vegetables, that were very plentiful. He told me, there were many people there, who were in their 90's and in very good shape...and no one was fat.

gota move........this is #1....we spent 5 years doing TAI CHI......it is moving meditation. also a martial art with the emphasis on "internal" energy....which is the life force within all of us. the chinese approach to this has been in use for over 4000 years. and nothing better has replaced it....for those of us who are 60-70........THIS should be a daily practice. i dont mean doing the 108 or 28 forms, but some sort of CHI GONG, either in a chair or standing....really helps the body......may not seem like its doing anything at 1st but with setting it into your daily routine......YOU WILL SEE ITS BENEFITS. i smoked for 30 years....prior do doing tai chi. now, when the nurse puts the O2 monitor on my finger.....she thinks the machine is not working as it read 98-99% and this is way above what most people show. the tai chi breathing....is the reason i get so much oxygen. here is a little video on the breathing....it will make dizzy when you 1st do this, as your body is not used to so much oxygen)))) this is the 1st thing you need to practice.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZRiHDrhJZY

Well, OP, the only exercise I get is the daily chores plus up and down two flights of stairs a couple times a day. I've been smoking for 70 years now (cigars the last 20 years or so), I eat whatever I like, and my O2 level is 98. My BMI is right in the middle of where it shd be. I've got an idea it's all in the genes.

yep...it's got to be mostly in the genes...but it also makes sense that certain life styles could be detrimental to one's genetic predisposition and shorten one's life.

I am in with the folks who believe that health and well-being are influenced by genetics.
(I also know that life long habits can alter genetically inherited attributes)
My dad died at age 82 from an abdominal aortic aneurysm, because he was too stubborn to go to a doctor for a regular annual check-up, he just figured he'd live forever, I guess.
My mother lived until 86, went for an annual check-up, and refused to believe ANYTHING her doctor told her and refused to take any medications that her doctor prescribed.
I inherited their genes, but not their attitudes about doctors, I take my doctor's recommendations seriously.
I'm 70 and have smoked for over 50 years. Doc has never suggested quitting. I drink alcohol and he has never suggested that I quit.
My Blood pressure is running 128/78. My BMI is 21.5. (I don't understand the cholesterol/tryglyceride stuff, but the doc says it is perfect.) Blood sugar is running 5.5-6 (Canadian stats, different than US) which is perfect.
I do have a bone mineral deficiency that contributed to my breaking my upper leg hip joint, taking a once a month pill to build up the bone mineral density.
I'm doing GOOD, and I'll be around to joke with OLD paint for a long time!!!! (unless I choke to death laughing at one of his selfies!!!)

See, Dave??? That's one of the things I was talkin' about....stress in your life.
You don't do nothing, except floatin' around in the surf, tokin' those "left-handed cigarettes" or sit around on the beach, sucking up margaritas and staring at the honeys!!!

LOL Dale...Stress is not a part of my life.
It used to be when I was in my 30's & 40's when I could handle it.
Nowadays, I don't do "nothing"...far from it...I do what I choose to do. Some days I work my ass off at the local food bank in Mexico,(Try hauling 50 pound bags of rice and beans and salt and sugar).. some days I meet up with friends and just hang out and drink and "solve all the world's problems" while observing some "hotties" that walk by. (Shirl and the other gals tend to observe the "butts" on the young guys too. When they aren't trying to figure out how to control we guys )
Retirement, for us, isn't a case of doing nothing, it is about choosing what we wish TO DO....
AND having been fortunate enough to have invested wisely enough to allow us to make the choices we wish to make.
I have to give yet another plug to an article by Bob Stephens...Meeting him changed my whole approach to pricing...AND earning a decent profit.
