I didn't want to hijack OP's or Joey's posts; but the are quite a few of us on here, that are (how you say) over the hill, and in need of some work....maybe in numerous ways.
As some know, I had a stroke, a few years back, and with God's help and a lot of therapy and regular exercise, I've been able to get most of the way back. At least, I'm still able to do most of the things I've always done....very blessed. I'm sure we all know of those, who have had strokes or heart attacks, and didn't make it. Or, some cases of younger people, that were afflicted with one of these devastating events, and had to quit work because of the after-effects.
But, everyday it becomes more evident that we are being given a sales job, by many so-called "health experts", and it's becoming more and more difficult to know which path is the right one, to keep as healthy and fit as possible, given the tremendous amount of abuse that my body has already endured over the years.
So many conflicting viewpoints and "studies": Don't eat salt....your body needs salt Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.....only drink water when you're thirsty You only need 15 minutes of moderate exercise 3 times a week.....you need to do at least 30 minutes of cardio or weight work every day Garlic is a wonderful supplement for many health issues.....garlic is pretty useless Eat lots of whole grains.....don't eat grains or oat products Vitamin E is good for skin....vitamin E does little of anything Coffee is good for you.....coffee is bad for you Eat a low-fat diet......fats are good for you Carbohydrates are beneficial for you.....carbs turn to sugar and are bad for you.
And on and on. I could list a lot more of these; but I'm sure many here are familiar with other conflicting opinions on health issues and products. If you have some good advice on maintaining health and/or fitness....let's share.
One thing I have found, and can vouch for the fact that it works, is circumin (turmeric). This is a powerful anti-inflammatory; and if you google it, you'll see the many things it can be beneficial for. I was having issues with my left knee, pain and swelling. This was my GOOD knee, the one not affected by the stroke, and I surely couldn't afford to have it go bad. I started taking circumin, and after a couple of months, the swelling is gone and the pain is virtually nil anymore. I also had pain in my left shoulder, probably a recurrence of bursitis I had a long time ago. That pain is also pretty much gone, at this time.

Dale, you are right. We've been bombarded with conflicting information. A huge part of the problem is simple greed. Huge corporations are all in this together. Food companies use ingredients that are cheap which helps profits but are not so healthy. That's okay, the pharmaceutical industry will come up with a pill to control your symptoms. The healthcare industry relies on you getting sick, and often, because they need you to come back over and over again. I read that there is an area in China where the townspeople pay their doctors on a regular basis when they are healthy. When they get sick, care is free. Now THAT is an incentive to keep your patients healthy. Another one I just can't figure out is that it is a known fact that radiation causes cancer, yet the medical community pushes women to get breast exams by mammogram which uses radiation and then they try to kill cancer with radiation. Just doesn't make sense.
But back to conflicting studies. A whistle blower from Monsanto said that they have a science division whose sole job is to debunk any study that claims their products are harmful. They have been caught red handed removing research results that proved harm from many of their chemicals. They bully and sue at the drop of a hat and many simply can't fight a mega corporation. Their executives, along with others from Dow and the GMA have infiltrated our government agencies so heavily that the FDA is almost completely useless at controlling them.
Some studies like the early findings that demonized saturated fat (meat) used conclusions based on observations of sample groups too small and were not peer reviewed with blind control groups. Eventually the truth comes out but in the mean time we get conflicting studies. The bottom line is if you make your own food, and I'm not talking hamburger helper, really make your own food, use restaurants as an occasional treat, avoid fast food, eat as many veggies as you can stand, eat some fruits, avoid sugar and grains as much as possible, use butter not margarine, you'll be much healthier.
Antibiotics are often necessary, but they also destroy a huge amount of the gut bacteria which is one of the main factors in your immune system. Anytime a person takes antibiotics, you should replenish your gut bacteria by eating fermented vegetables or taking a pro-biotic for a while.

SOD Superoxide dismutase, or SOD, is an extremely potent antioxidant that protects cells against damage from free radicals. It is one of the three main antioxidant enzymes found in our cells. CLA Cattle that roam outdoors and feed on natural diets of grass produce high levels of CLA. Conjugated linoleic acid is used for cancer, “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), obesity, weight loss caused by chronic disease, bodybuilding, and limiting food allergy reactions. CLA is related to the omega-6 fatty acids, one of the two types of essential fatty acids that help the body increase metabolic rates, boost the immune system and keep cholesterol levels in check. CLA is found in dairy and animal fats, such as beef, lamb, whole milk, and eggs, but cannot be produced by the human body. DHEA Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone that comes from the adrenal gland. It is also made in the brain. DHEA leads to the production of androgens and estrogens (male and female sex hormones). DHEA levels in the body begin to decrease after age 30. Levels decrease more quickly in women. Lower DHEA levels are found in people with hormonal disorders, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, depression, diabetes, inflammation, immune disorders, and osteoporosis. Corticosteroids, birth control taken by mouth, and agents that treat psychiatric disorders may reduce DHEA levels.
Evidence suggests that DHEA may help treat depression, obesity, and osteoporosis. However, more research is needed to support its use for hormonal disorders, sexual function, and lupus (an autoimmune disorder that affects the skin and organs). DHEA has been studied for the treatment of HIV, schizophrenia, and severe injury.

Great, guys! There's nothing wrong with trying to keep out of the medicine chest, and into Mother Nature's closet.
I do take some of the above mentioned. I started taking red yeast rice to replace the synthetic statins I was prescribed. Then, in another example of possibly being mislead, I read how we were told not to take red yeast rice, because the "whatever" ingredient that was the natural form of a statin, had been removed. Go figure...
There's enough sickness and stress-related maladies going around, that the medical industry/profession doesn't have to manufacture reasons to have to cure us. They're a big part of the reason we're sick.

the red rice yeast........IS WHERE THEY GET the statins for LIPITOR...and red rice yeast will do the same thing LIPITOR DOES.. DONT TAKE IT. for lowering cholestrol the best non drug is NIACIN. NOW THERE ARE 2 TYPES AVAILABLE....FLUSHING & NON-FLUSHING. the non-flushing...will not help control cholestrol. you have to take the FLUSHING type. now the only problem is THE FLUSHING...... some people experiance it worse then others. best to try a low dose 100mg at 1st....if you get no reactions, then try 2 100 mg. you want to be able to take as much as you can WITHOUT THE FLUSH..... flushing is sorta like a quick dose of the hives....your skin will get warm, and itch.......depending on the amount you took it wont last more then an hour.... but it is unpleasant while it is happeneing. also as you take it for a period of time you do become "tolerant" to its effects.

I can attest to how well one "natural" works. For years I absolutely dreaded winter, the gray skies and bare trees put me in a miserable mood, really miserable. I forget who suggested I try vitamin D but it worked . It worked better than any kind of medicine I have ever taken. It also is good for helping with bone density loss and high blood pressure, both of which I have.

Thanks guys! For quite awhile, I had read where red yeast rice had a natural form of a statin, where the Lipitor, etc. was a synthetic statin, with all the side effects. Now, I've read that the rice can also have the same side effects; and that in fact, cholesterol is not all that bad for us. How many years have they been telling us something entirely different?
For a good while, it's amazed me that, any magazine you pick up, or any TV commercial you watch that deal with some "miracle" drug....the ad takes more time on the TV, and sometimes more than an entire additional page in a magazine, telling us of all the side effects that could be caused by the taking of this medication. And some of the side effects are WORSE than the disease you're trying to cure.
There is so much to learn, when trying to get through the rest of our lives....to preserve the health that we haven't been able to destroy, through various "follies" that have come about at various times of our lives.
And just about the time you hear about some type of natural cure or remedy, that you think may be of some benefit, to a particular malady you may be experiencing......along comes some other "medical guru", who poo-poo's the product, and maybe tries to sell you something he's promoting.

Vitamin D was a near miracle for me too. I take 2000 units a day in the winter and 1000 a day in the summer. Since I started supplementing I have not had a cold or flu. I could count on getting a summer cold and a winter cold every year.
Free range chickens, pastured cows, that's how mother nature intended the animals to grow. CAFO's (Confined Animal Feeding Operations) is not healthy for animals. I saw a video of a chicken farmer that came forward. It was in his contract with Tyson that his chickens were not allowed to see the light of day. 1000's of chickens were confined in a building from hatchling to slaughter.
Even our veggies are harmed, not even counting the pesticides being used on them. I read a report that stated that the iron content in today's spinach is about 45% of what it was 40 years ago. There is a big push to get victory gardens started up again and an effort to keep legacy seeds available. I think it's a great idea because Monsanto would love nothing more than to completely control the seed industry. When a farmer uses their GMO seeds, they are not allowed to take any seeds from that crop for next year. Monsanto owns the right to those seeds. Do we really want the biggest herbicide company on the planet in complete control of seeds? They are trying because they are buying up seed companies like crazy.

Seriously, I've drank (drunk) for most of my life, and have really slacked off a lot, in recent years. But I'm sure I probably done some damage "somewhere" at some point in time. I do still enjoy a beer, or a marqarita on the weekend; but that's about it.
Felix, thanks! I also forgot to give a little tidbit about the circumin (turmeric). For some reason, our bodies do not assimilate it very well, under normal circumstances. But, there is an ingredient in black pepper called PIPERIN, that makes the body absorb the circumin very well. So after reading some articles, I learned to get a bottle of whole peppercorns at the grocery store; then take 4 or 5 of them, and bite them, just to break the outside shell. Then, you swallow them with the circumin. You won't get your mouth burned up by the pepper, and will get the benefits of the supplement.
And don't get discouraged. It takes about 6 to 8 weeks for the stuff to really work; but it does. And if you google it, you'll see it has many other wonderful benefits also. Good luck!
God bless ya, Raymond. I hear exactly what you're saying. I guess none of us can know how long we're going to be here for. But if I can help it, and with the Good Lord's help, I plan to be able to get around and "do stuff", til I die. I've got friends and acquaintances that are younger than me, who are either on a walker, or on oxygen, or some other debilitating contraption. That's not what I want to consider as a quality of life that I'd want to have to spend the next 5 or 10, or maybe 20 years enduring.

Seriously, I will be 71 at the end of July. I have some regular "old age" problems but I am still going strong. Alcohol and tobacco might have slowed me down a bit, but a "collision" with a beer truck or a ciggie truck probably would have been fatal.
I eat what appeals to me at the moment and my blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels are all at acceptable levels.

4 years ago , Ernie's doctor threatened him, told him he would need to go on insulin if he didn't!t lose weight. I was willing to go with any changes he wanted to try to lose 100+ pounds. After trying vegetarian for 6 weeks, we both needed something to bite into. After lots of reading, we are both pretty much on a paleo diet. We immediately changed to Low carbohydrate, HIGH fat, moderate protein, Gluten free ( not using gluten free products as a substitute, pretty much grain free too. In 6 months, Ernie lost 70 pounds, I lost 35 ( and now have the energy of 35 year old, I am 63. We have been on the low cArb, high fat for 4 years. never feel hungry. Carbohydrate foods is what makes cholesterol. My HDL. Went from 50 to 145, Triglycerides are 40. They only med I am on is 2000 IU. Vitamin d. Ernie hasn't had to go on insulin, he has lowered his blood pressure medicine. If he eats no more than 40 grams carbohydrate a day, his blood sugar stays below 135. (anything above 135 causes damage to nerves, kidneys, pancreas, liver , heart and eyes.) A great book to read Is "What your doctor may NOT tell you about heart disease" by Dr Mark Houston, MD,MS. he thoroughly explains cholesterol and blood tests for your lipids. Going gluten free, Ernie's sinus problems and acid reflux went away, he can think more clearly. My going gluten free has made ALL the arthritis pain go completly away (in my hands and feet, I can now open and close my hand completly and pain free.

See, that's what I've shot for, in this post. We've been given such a bunch of crap, from so many sources, that the right direction can many times go in many different directions.?@!
Right here, we've heard several times "NO GRAIN". Why is that? For years, we've heard "Whole grain this" and "always look for whole grain wheat bread" and on and on. No oatmeal? What grains does it cover? Rice? Corn? No pasta?
I'm going to have to do some research on right ways to eat too. The Mediterranean Diet's supposed to be great; now the Paleo Diet's on the table. Seems like, every other month, some new plan comes out. What's the right way, and what's a gimmick to make some "expert" rich?
And speaking of rich.....some of these diets are calling for "organic" this, and "free-range" that, and "gluten-free" whatever, or "omega-free" something.....these are foreign items here. Not only are most of these types of things largely not available in this neck of the woods (or else 50 miles away to some "earth foods" place) and this stuff is expensive. Isn't there any good food that an ordinary old sign painter can eat and enjoy, without coronary damage or taking out a second mortgage on the house?

Inflammation is what causes heart problems and other problems. SUGAR, in all its forms, is the #1 cause of inflammation. (Sugar, fructose, corn syrup, honey, molasses, dextrose, artificial sweeteners -except liquid stevia. Don't eat pasta, rice, anything made with any kind of flour,.
Od Paint, Celiac disease is only 1 of 200 conditions caused by gluten. You can easily have a gluten sensitivity. Exema ,psoriasis foggy thinking, post nAsal drip, achy joints, feeling sluggish, "hay fever", ear aches, sinus infections. Are some of the problems. You have to eliminate wheat/gluten (wheat, rye and barley and some oatmeal) for 2- 12 weeks to feel a difference. if you feel better, then go back on for a few days-to a week and see if the symptoms come back. If you have celiac disease- to prevent weight gain after eliminating the wheat, DO NOT use the gluten free products--- do wihtout,
I use as pasta substitutes, spaghetti squash, slices of zUchini, or eggplant. For spaghetti, I slice thinly cabbage, cook it in spaghetti sauce,
pizza crust can be made from. Cauliflower and cheese, and egg.

diane, i was a vegetarian from 1990till 2010....i have been introduced to mostly all of these modalities of diet modification in that period. as a vegetarian we socialized with many others all doing this and other things to be healthier. as i said...those with "Celiac Disease" are really the only people who benifit from non-gluten diets. as for what you say.......IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER... great....but it doesnt work for everyone. same with the MUCUS free modality. in 2010, after my OPEN HEART SURGERY...after being a vegetarian for almost 20 years...I STILL HAD A BLOCKAGE IN MY ARTERIES. iam sure that being a vegetarian...got me those 20 years.....hehehehehehe. since 2010. well actually 2011....after the heart surgery....4 different cardiologists told me the same thing "85% of the cholestrol created in the body comes from CARBS!" SINCE 2011.... i have been eating high protein, low carb. i still do a lot of COMPLEX CARBS(all good for you)and almost none of the SIMPLE CARBS. i eat bacon/sausage n eggs almost every morning. fried chicken, pulled pork, fish from CAPT D's/long john silvers...NO POTATOES, BREAD, RICE PASTA....BEANS...with any of the meat. my cholestorol is better now then when i wasa vegitarian. dont gain weight, but eat less at a sitting and 3-4 times a day now........ NOW these carbs create SUGAR.... so iam with you on NO SUGAR......as for STEVIA, any processed STEVIA is chemically enhanced. WE GROW OUR OWN.....its easy to grow. we cut em and dry the leaves, put em in a bag, take a handful into the motar and pestal and grind to a fine powder.and use just like you would sugar. its not white, but more of green-brown....but is as sweet as sugar. + ZERO CALORIES no additives or chemical enhancements.

speaking of china.........Chinese medicine, work on the total opposite mode then the western medical system does. here...doctor treat the symptoms, chinese medicine treats the disease/aliment. a lot of the cures are not from pharmacology but are simple readily available herbs and plants. also the treatment is not based on how you feel but on how your energy flows through out the meridians of your body....and organs. most of the medicine dispensed is in a tea. and along with the ingestion of these mixture of herb and plants, the patient is given instructions on using there own internal energy........as part of the cure to said aliment. the 5 years we did TAI CHI, we also learned to use chinese medicine. doing CHI GONG is part of the cure to clear any meridian stagnation.

Complex carbohydrates include: Whole grains, pasta, oatmeal, sweet and white potatoes, corn, beans, peas, lentils....not exactly what was said in the above.
So which is which......or is it somewhere in the middle?

Last year I turned 62, still physically in good condition and healthy, but I have not been to a doctor since a high school physical for Field and Track! but my blood pressure is a little high.
Anyway, I started a regiment of vitamins, fruits and vegtables, an asprin a day, and eliminated as much processed food and sugar as possible.
I started riding a bike, bought a old 10 speed for $20. It was killing me, so I found a 2009 Jamis road bike on craigs list for $180...and it was better, faster and lighter, but now I have moved on to a 2014 TREK ( ONE series 12) with SORA components and ride about 7 to 10 miles daily.
My fastest speed to date was 34 miles per hour. (wind behind me and a long downhill run) My average speed on a 10 mile ride is about 18 MPH
My son just bought a full Carbon fiber bike (BMC Gran Fondo.... The frame weighs less than a bottle of water! He has lost over 40 pounds, we ride together, but he can reach speeds over 30 miles an hour on flat roads...After a few minutes he is a mile ahead of me. Its hard to justify spending $2600 - $3000 for a bike on social security...maybe he will give it to me when he moves on to the $6000 bike he wants!
So, I have lost 15 pounds, now at 160 pounds, my oldest son and I have something we can do together, and now my wife has joined us on rides.
Riding a bike, no matter if its an old pig iron Schwin that weighs a ton or a new carbon fiber bike... the benefits are the same. But passing everyone else on a bike and some cars, is what makes a person want to get back on the bike and ride again! yeee haw!

Joe, when I hit 70, that would be the bike for me also. Those bikes are not inexpensive either, but spending money on health is a good investment.

Hi Diane, In your post above, you are referring to staying away from sugar, sweeteners, corn syrup, honey, molasses, etc.
I recently picked up a copy of the January issue of Better Nutrition magazine, at the local health food store. It has an article on the damage that can be done to us by artificial sweeteners.
But it lists alternatives as:Stevia, Monk Fruit and Xylitol. It also mentions honey, as an anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory and contains antioxidants. Also mentioned as viable alternatives are Coconut sugar, that has zinc, potassium and gut fiber; and pure maple sugar, which is supposed to be rich in antioxidants.

I don't believe that honey in moderation is nearly as bad for you as the alternative. I went 6 weeks on black coffee thinking I would get used to it. I love a good dark coffee, but without the sugar I was drinking it just to try to get used to it, in other words I wasn't enjoying it like I used to. So I went with adding a little raw unfiltered honey to my coffee. After going without any sweetener for 6 weeks it didn't really take all that much honey to make the coffee taste great again. I'm lucky I have a friend who keeps bees so I get great local raw honey at a ridiculously low price compared to the retail stores.
Dale, the two biggest culprits in our diets are sugar and grains, with wheat being the worst. I just read that if you have to have bread, rye or barley is much better than wheat.

If you have a sensitivity to gluten, you can't eat rye or barley- they have gluten. Gluten makes my arthritis in my hands and feet ache, Ernie and my 2 kids and 2 grandkids get stuffy sinuses.

the honey is the best NATURAL sweetener. we live in area near one of the finest honey created. TUPELO HONEY. Pure Tupelo honey has a light amber golden color with a slight greenish cast. This honey is a choice table grade honey with a delicious flavor with a delicate distinctive taste. Honey produced from only the White Tupelo is the only honey that will not granulate. Due to it's high laevulose (44.3%), low dextrose (29.98%) ratio (average), doctors have been able to recommend some diabetic patients to consume Tupelo Honey. wifes sister live near there. and when she come to pcola we have a bring us a gallon. and like i said earlier........WE GROW our own STEVIA. dry the leaves and grind it in a motar and pestal. 100% natural. PURE MAPLE SYRUP....... hard to come by and expensive.......is also great. when i lived in maine(65-73)the sugar camps(what they call maple syrup production place)in the spring would have pancake breakfasts...and the maple syrup....that went on the pancakes was coming right out of the cookers....AWESOME!!!!

And so it goes....this post has been a pretty neat adventure. Lots of good information; lots of conflicting viewpoints.....but all aimed at our living a healthy lifestyle.
Couple things that I picked out....what works for one person, doesn't always work for another. Dave's bike riding is great for him...I can't do it, because the stroke affected my balance. Can you imagine what chaos I might cause (even though I loved to ride bikes) if I tried to ride today? We don't have bike lanes here. Some people have allergies to honey. Some can tolerate this supplement; some can't.
One source says grain is bad; another says it's good. Depends on the person. One source says that Company A's Resveratrol is no good; but the one that they sell is great. Anyone know why? Or are we just supposed to take their word for it?
I think that from this, it's pretty clear that natural products, either plant or animal, is generally better for us, than man-made or GMO stuff. "Real" meat is better than prepared meats. Baked, grilled or boiled is generally better than fried or deep-fried....which is probably against every law of nature in Mississippi. We have deep-fried "everything" here...which may explain why our obesity and health issue rates are so high.
But, some of us keep pokin' along, trying to do the right thing, and running through the quagmire of conflicting information.....looking for "the right way."

Dianne, gluten aside, my main point was that the wheat of today is nothing like the wheat of 50 years ago and it is the absolute worse grain to eat. No grain is a healthy food no matter how you mill it. I was just saying wheat is the worst.
Dale, the only people pushing whole grain is good are the people that stand to profit from it. They are fighting the "grain is bad" camp just as hard as the sugar industry is fighting the "sugar should be labeled a carcinogen" camp. Heck, there are still doctors telling their patients that saturated fat will cause heart attacks.

There is no single answer for best diet much of it depends on the kind of gut bacteria you have. The average person has 100 trillion bacteria living in and on them, that is 10x more that the cells in your body. They are affected by your food and the antibiotics you take. Changing your diet will change your gut bacteria. Recent books like "Grain Brain", "Wheat Belly", and "Brain Maker" give information on the latest research.
Ever go to a restaurant and order grain fed steaks?
The thing that the agriculture people understand quite well is how to fatten up animals. They the animals get grain on feed lots.
So the recommendation to eat "Healthy whole grains" becomes a message to fatten yourself up.
Some people get very sick eating grains others only have mild effects. The only way to know is doing an elimination diet. Then add a suspect food back and see if you feel different.
I have done this several times in the past 20 years and have found that wheat gives me foggy thinking, a difficulty in finding the word I want to say, wheezing when I breathe and swollen sinuses. Dairy does not affect me in small amounts but if I eat cheese I get thick mucus in the back of my throat that makes me want to cough.

OK OK OK...........just turned 65. Went through the sixties out here in California and had a job in the Golden Gate Park in 1968. So yes I roamed the Haight & Asbury scene. I have not had a stroke but have lost friends to them. Sad. Great for the comebacks. I have been living with most of the above illnesses that are in previous posts plus stage four cirrhosis for over 10 years (Von Dutch style). What has hammered me most of all (a degenerative bone disease, depression and all the curve balls life has blasted at me)is the after effects of liver treatments. The horrific side effects from "the cure" drugs that I took have left me suffering. I continue to endure. So I am not ready to "cash in" but wish not to slide deeper into the illnesses. I have taken positive steps forward and some times back a step or two. With the help from one of my daughters, A chef in the Coast Guard and who is "vegan" and sometimes "raw" sent me a book called "Skinny Bastard" by Rory Freedman & Kim Barnouin. I am not a reader. I read it cover to cover and hence began a new way to live(Jack La lane style). I lost 120 pounds (gained after I stopped smoking cigarettes and drinking da booze(anything with alcohol in it) I started walking. It lifted my spirits and after about six weeks the weight washed away. I have since lost the ability to walk five miles (one of the side effects of polyperipheral neuropathy, BAD) but I can ride ten on my indoor recumbent exerciser. I eat some meat on occasion but "JUICE" every morning and have for almost a decade. Swear by it , #%?@ #%?@!. So yes, inform your self, NetFlix, YouTube, the internet and for goodness sake get a second opinion. Now please look up "Get to the point panel jam" on facebook and consider coming out to my neck of the woods, exactly that, the Redwood Forests of Humboldt Co. California, where I was born and raised. Not much left as they have stepped up on sending whats left to China. Sad. You can help by coming out. I have reserved a group camp site, and any artist, up to 50 can pitch a tent. It is on the ocean and is close to many attractions like a Virgin Redwood stand the town of Trinidad and the Lagoons, Freshwater,Stone, Dry and Big Lagoon. There is also famous Agate Beach, Fern Canyon and the Roosevelt Elk. I will leave with this exercise, limit ones meat intake. Limit one's processed food and get a quality jucer (Breville) and a quality blender(Vitamix) and have a Party!

Rice is the main thing the Japanese have always lived on and, from what I know, they live longer than anyone on Earth. When I was in Korea, they told me they ate mostly rice, 3 times a day. In the year I was there, I never once saw a fat man.
