Has anyone tried and had any luck v-carving Sintra? My client wants everything 'plastic'. I can put vinyl sleeves over the pressure treated 4x4 posts, not an issue, but I'd like to 'incise' carve the lettering - if possible. No multicam here - it would have to be by hand.

+1. V carving would be extremely difficult by hand because of varying depths. ( Not very deep in a thin stroke of a letter, and deeper in the thick strokes.)

I have to be honest, Shirley; I've done little carving. But I can't imagine that carving the HDU would be that difficult. It's just a different type of material, that will require some learning or possibly a different type of chisel/cutters. I guess a lot of it, depends on your budget and the time schedule.
I have done a bit of hand "carving" with a die grinder/dremel tool. I'd think the foam would be easier to carve than some types of wood, due to the differences in hardness and/or grain structure.

V carving is nice with a CNC, I wouldn't attempt to hand carve it. But painting V carved letters can be a real challenge! You need a very crisp edge or the paint will migrate back and forth from the sign face into the letter. It's best to carve through a paint mask, then paint the letters and peel off the mask. Easier said than done.

Thanks everyone. I figured it could be done on a CNC, a lot easier than by hand. If it was HDU - no problem. I might even attempt it but for the fact it's a sans serif font...if it was a crazy font that didn't have to conform exactly - it might be worth a try.
