I'm doing a house sign and the fellow would like it done on hardwood. I was planning on using vinyl. Are there any hardwoods that can take vinyl? Is the right hardwood stable enough to be a long term sign? I like to do it on maple. If need be, I can use sign paint.

are you gona put some kinda clear coat on it 1st??? i dont thin vinyl will stick to raw wood.... seal the wood, some kinda clear coat it, apply vinyl, and clear coat over it......then you got no problem with being outside.

We usually used Sikkens wood finish on exterior wood....but it required a couple coats. It also usually needed a maintenance coat a few years later (which would not work over vinyl).
We were using this product on Redwood and Cedar...

Yeah, Mark, some kind of exterior wood sealer is in order. That will close up much of the porosity and allow the vinyl to stick pretty well. Clear coat if needed.

Maple is not a good bet for outdoor signs or outdoor anything. Mahogany is.

Any clear finish on maple will last about 2 years outdoors. White Oak & any mahogany from the western hemisphere will last quite well, but the clear is your weak link .... especially one that doesn't penetrate the surface.

I've had excellent results with Awlgrip clears, though I've never used it on maple. The stuff is expensive & nasty to use - so charge accordingly.
