I paint purty pictures nowadys and have zero lettering colors, vinyl etc.
I will make various graphic design projects via the Adobe, progams and still even design T-Shirts on my Flexi, then turn them into seps' for sceening.
Even sold the cutter!
Send out for any print work. Less expense !
More fun time, less aggrevation.

I guess Facebook seems to have defeated many forums like Letterville. I don't care for that trend. I tried Facebook and found it way too "invasive" and "pervasive" so I opted out of it.
As far as what "old products are dying out and are not needed"?
FAX MACHINES!!! I hate the fact that some banks and credit card companies can e-mail me stuff to sign, but insist on receiving the signed document by fax in reply!!!
25 years ago FAX was state of the art technology...Not anymore...Who can even accurately read a Faxed document compared to a 600 DPI document via e-mail?
BTW...Joey and Si and Old Paint(even though he hasn't commented YET for some reason)...I ain't dead either!!!

I,really, was not going to say anything....but I could not let this one pass.....too easy, paisano ! PEN DA HOE would be how it sounds, in Spanish....but the correct spelling of the word is PENDEJO.

PENDEJO is a single pubic hair. In Mexico´s slang, as well as in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, etc., etc.... it is used as an insult like idiot or fool.
I truly hope that this helps......By the way, this is why God gave us "Google Translate".....so we can learn how to insult each other, in a different language.....during our retirement years.

I don't know the reason; but several different forums I lurk around, have a good bit less traffic than a year or two ago.
Part of it's surely the economy, making some folks pursue different avenues of business. But the fact that a lot of you old fossils are dropping off and kicking back, has got to have a lot to do with it also.

dale, and most of the others who did/do more then vinyl.......the whole business has changed not just us getting old. you me and many others over 55....have no interest in become a "print shop." we got into this trade because of our inate abilities to paint and draw......NOT so much as a business BUT as a business we were good at and enjoyed doing. I STILL enjoy painting....and do as much as i can. vinyl and print are ok for the churn out/yada yada signs. PAINT..... is for the finer and better looking stuff. always will be. as for me, doing pottery is also one of those trades....i do it CAUSE I CAN.... and its like painting, you "create" rather then "produce." as for visiting the boards.....FACEBOOK....SKYPE have sorta become the place to go. i frequent 101, and its more of printers board then a sign board.

Let's see. I still use my pounce machine, Bon Ami Cake Soap, 1-Shot (Some with Lead) gold leaf, stabillos, airbrush and Chromactic Paint thinner (I have 3 gallons) But I have to admit, 75% of my work is vinyl/digital print. On the other hand, I don't have a smart phone or a Facefoot account. I don't want the Gestapo to find me. Except for the clothing style and lack of electricity, I could easily go Amish.

I have noticed on the weekends, the posts here do drop off. I still enjoy hearing all the bright comments and the community of like minded souls, but it does seem it is aging a bit with fewer and fewer younger people here. The main reason I sold out was because I was having to deal with a younger group of clients. They either thought of me as some god or else just some old geazer who knew a few things about signs. I think the old geazer won out! I just can't get rid of some of that one shot and my quills. As i drive around here in Santa Fe I see very few hand-painted signs anymore. Some sandblasted older signs still burning gas, but most are vinyl, now. I remember even ten years ago there were so many interesting hand-lettered small signs, especially at the galleries. Gone is even the neon in all the small towns coming down here. Gee, we musta turned into crumugeons so magically. 180,000 windshields later, glad I moved on.

preston, I was in santa fe a couple years ago for a family reunion...and I took many photos of some very fine work. and I think many were in the area of your place... the main road is on a slight incline or decline, depending on your direction of travel. I really felt good in santa fe ! have fun

The most seldom used tool in my shop would probably be a screwdriver, followed by a handsaw. Products I'd want would be to adhere smalt, and varnish for window gold. Tempera colors that covered and enamels that flowed off the brush, covered and lasted and worked fine with what was just common paint thinner. I was looking at my knives that were once used to hand cut lacquer films for screen printing.

How often do you ever perforate a pattern with a hand wheel any more? When was the last time you used one of those folding air sprayers that you blow through? I found a roll of #682 last week and used some...it was great.

I keep a hand pounce wheel in my kit and use it several times a year when out on a job and need a quick pattern. I consider it a necessary tool, kind of like a string and push pins. You never know.

I think Facebook is fading out. I have switched to Twitter and have gotten many more business connections. Even though its nice to connect with friends on facebook, I went through and deleted all "acquaintances" With twitter I can post photos and add hashtags which has bumped me up to page one of google in just one month. I was previously on page 2.

Many of my customers of the younger generation are always asking to "like" me, and twitter. I ask them why? They said so you can attract a younger customer base. I then reply: "You're here arent't you?"
I'll never be convinced that the ever changing media fad of the day really is worth the time invested to keep it current.

I still use plenty of MDO, use my pounce wheel and Smaltz. along with vinyl, digital printing, and LED message centers. The more tools you have, the greater the diversity. We were hired twice to paint 4' letters around home plate for the Boston Red Sox, why? because we could. Granted some products are not available anymore, and some of the new ones are better. But over all I try to use the best tool/material for the job.
Just because a product is new, doesnt mean it's better, just means it's new!

I don't know if this fits...but had problem with urethane striping color not drying well (clear wetted it and smeared the gold) and found that the can of catalyst was bad. I use one up in a year or two...and this was bad. had to do the gold over because of it, but learned lesson.

The catalysts have a limited shelf life which is even shorter once opened.
When I was painting vehicles, I bought the appropriate amount of catalyst for the paint I bought for each paint job.
When I was in the sign business I always bought the smallest container of catalyst that I could because I never knew when the next job would come along that required catalyzed paint.

I did take a "job" for my son a couple of months ago- he was in a musical production of "Into the woods" and wanted me to design the set... which led me to paint the set pieces as well. I designed and planned everything before hand, but when I got there to paint, I just pulled out a cheap flat brush and a paint roller, a piece of vine charcoal... It was very fun and relaxing to be able to just throw some paint on some canvas... I think in a different life, I would pursue more theatre set design.
I haven't used my pounce machine in several years, or my t-shirt airbrushes... but I don't want to get rid of them, I will pull them back out someday. I also have about 20 Rapiograph pens that are still mint condition.

I rarely use any of the tools I have in the shop and have been wanting to sell most all of them, except my swords..
Believe me, I have many tools and I also have 2 inch thick by 12 inch wide by 8 foot long redwood boards, band saws, routers, table saws, hand tools, tool boxes, guns, knives, moose antlers, doll collections, toys and a bullet proof vest from back when..

Rusty, Everyone in my immediate family has passed on, yet not before they relieved themselves of their belongings at my home..
Even Jack Wills left me with things he couldn't take with him to wherever the heck he was going and now it is my job to delete what it is that I have.
And one more thing Rusty, you'll be more surprised when I tell you what I use my vest for , I use it when visiting with persons who question my manhood with statements that make me uncomfortable. Gerald, if you are clearing over urethane striping you don't need to ad the catalyst. Also, if you apply the clear to heavy, urethane will run/sag.

I just got my opaque projector down out of the attic, found a use for it. I sold my Elecropounce years ago and came to regret it. At the time, I thought computers and plotters were the future. I found I don't like sitting at a computer for very long and I like hand painting. I keep a hand crank drill in a toolbox in case batteries go dead out on a job.
