See, even with the use of home computors and free down loaded artwork, we still get crap from people. "Newphew Art" hasn't really gotten any better. Low res jpegs, unknown fonts, bad color combonations. How mant times have we heard, "Can't you just scan it?" Overall, I think it has gottne worst. Double arcs using a italized font, script using all caps, red letters, grren outline with a black drop shade on a white background. Oh yeah, make ya wanna hit "Delete" on the customer. I sometimes just want to sit the customer at my computor and tell them, "Here, you fix your artwork for me and call me when it's ready Biotch"

Yes I have had to perform a few 'miracles' in the past... and probably in the future. I always charge to perform those 'miracles' and if the client isn't willing to pay.... well.... See Ya!

I get uncomfortable about it when they need a quote on a bunch of different signs, vehicles and all and "the logo we need on it, we're working on it. It will be ready in a couple of days". Usually not a good sign.

A few weeks ago, a truck customer who has a hay truck, wanted to have a cartoon of a bull leaning on a bale of hay, painted up on the back of the sleeper. Then he says, "I need to have someone draw it up for me" I looked at him and asked "Who do you know that can draw better than me?" Even after looking at the artwork on my walls, it didn't occur to them that I could produce cartoons.

Don't let them get you down Alica, it is all part of being a sign painter. We all have to put up with it. Just tell them you are a professional and you do not do immature work.

Many years ago, a very wise man by the name of Paul Harvey, was talking on his radio program of something he called "the dumbing-down of America".
Well, it's happening, folks; and it's for real....and that's the rest of the story.

One time a customer did not want to pay for design. I said...go ahead, draw or design exactly what you want, and I will make,it that way" They quickly got the idea. Once I got into a little disagreement with a sign shop owner. He made some sort of comment about how fast I was lettering a yacht. Next time around, he said something about it again, I said "Go ahead, letter it yourself then. You might find out you are a REAL ARTIST" Well, I never hear another complaint again after that. To his credit, though, he did try. And he was sweating bullets learning to hand letter on a customers nice, clean white fiberglass yacht, with One Shot. I charge by the job anyway.

I feel your pain. I'm amazed how much crap I have to fix from so called professional designers. Makes me want to puke. They're as bad as the do it yourselfer's. The past few years more people use weird bastard fonts you've never heard of, don't vectorize them and you spend half your day on a font search or have to redraw them. It all started with Helvetica back in the 70's. Some of us old painters couldn't wait for the vinyl cutters to save us from painting miles of type to match what the art directors wanted. We created a monster.

It's the "professional designers" that I find way more irritating than the nephew artist. Had a guy that used to have a big design firm in NYC get all bent out of shape when I asked him to convert his file to outlines/vector before sending it to me. When I explained that I may not have the fonts he said "Well it's only Helvetica the most common font in the world". Yea and there's like 10,000 versions of it and I don't have every one.
