I know this strategy may not be for everyone, but our pricing guide is built around what it costs us to make a sign in our shop not what others are charging. For instance, our price for digital printing on a vehicle is: Cost of cleaning vehicle per sqft + cost of print media per sqft + cost of ink per sqft + cost of applying vinyl per sqft + cost of cut weed tape per sqft + cost of laminate per sqft + cost of laminating per sqft All of the material costs are multiplied by our markup percentage before going into the above formula. Then the whole thing is multiplied by an amount determined by how much sqft the job is (less sqft higher number lower sqft lower number) to account for waste & hassle of doing a smaller job. All of the labor costs are calculated by figuring out how long it takes to do something per sqft & then multiplying that by our hourly rate. So, if it takes 1 hour to clean 50sqft then your sqft labor rate will be .02 * your hourly rate. I have a big spreadsheet that I built to figure the whole thing out. We update it when prices go up or down. That way our prices are flexible & can change as material prices & overhead prices go up & down.
just thinking the same thing. We cannot sell a wrap around here for anything. Someone south is doing them for some outrageously cheap numbers. Not sure who?! I don't know what others are charging, but when I do get one, it's because of our knowledge about them that gets us the job. And knowing that the materials we use are the ones we have had no problem with!

printing has become a whole nuther market. we have em here selling to the public......at less per sq ft then they charge us!!!!! and its a strange business idea, that just because it dont cost as much to keep the machine running as it does if it needs repair from sittin idle.....befuddles me ........ and the problem with most printers who were not sign shops to begin with, treat printing signs like printing restaurant place mats.....the more you get the cheaper the price...

been a while since I've been on here. I think the problem is industry wide on all facets of what we do. I do digital printing but a majority of what we do is now wholesale channel letters. We market nation wide at http://www.UnitedWholesaleSigns.com but find it harder to compete because of the desperation of the others to sell a sign. I don't think many shops have spreadsheets or even a working knowledge of how to run a business. HAHA

I would have agreed a few years ago Jerry, but I think more and more "long term" small shops are now figuring out that the business end of the work is just as important as the beauty of the product they put out.
