Typical. I see that all the time. Us folks on the production end soon find out what a pain in the ass most of these design firms are to work for. They charge for billable hours. A lot of that is for bull**** meetings and constant revisions.

I think the image looks OK too...But unlike Dave S. I would have designed it for $40,000 CDN!!!
It IS a shame, though, that cities and townships get companies from outside of their area to do work that could be provided by local businesses and would help support those businesses who pay taxes locally.

Personally I think it is a weak design...I assume the shapes are representative of the sun and waves...it's Pensacola...if that's right then why is the sun blue and the waves green...I don't get it...I'm confused...and the colors look like they've been out in the Florida sun way too long...colors are all the same value...there is no pop in the design...the upper green swoosh seems disconnected and doesn't flow back into the composition...if those are waves I don't like water portrayed with sharp points...needs to be flowing lines...lettering is weak...too thin...it doesn't read well...and actually characters touch both left and right hand borders...I don't know about that...if I had been paid only $50.00 as a design fee I wouldn't have let this out my door...it would have been put in my trash bin...wait...it would never have made it to my trash bin because it would never have existed in the first place...if you haven't already guessed...I don't like it.

What is Pensacola known for?.........That should have been my starting point, as an out of town designer, hired by the fools who run the city, to design their new branding........Of course, once that the fee of many thousands of dollars had been agreed on, with them......here is where I would start soaking my brain with everything related to Pensacola, and attempt to earn all the money that those fools, who run the city, will be paying me for my design: ( example )

What Joey said. Along with being accused of some shady deals, many cites in Florida are not paying back on thier bonds. Yikes, the madmen are in charge. On the other hand, yep, I'd take the money. Shoot, I'd do it for half.

richard, pensacola has been known as the city of 5 flags. and also the 1st place to be inhabited by spanish explorers. we are older the SAINT AUGUSTIN FLORIDA. A Spanish Expedition Established St. Augustine in Florida September 8, 1565 In 1559 Tristan de Luna established a short-lived settlement at Pensacola Bay which became one of the first European-established settlements in what is now the continental United States; however, it was soon abandoned. every thing here is 5 FLAGS oriented. GOOGLE city of 5 FLAGS.... pensacola comes up in all searches, these flags all have ruled here. Spain, France, Britain, the Confederacy and the United States. apprently the NEW BRANDING... wants nothing to do with the history. the neatest thing i have seen lately is....... A WHITE CHRISTMAS at pensacola beach.....sand is same color as snow...AND A LOT WARMER)))) http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g34550-d142879-r50949877-Pensacola_Beach-Pensacola_Florida.html

i like HISTORY of areas i lived. for what its worth, i also come from a place that can trace its history of human inhabitants....... 16,000 years old. Some estimates peg its age at 19,000 years! i used to play under this rock shelter and we would build fires to cook fish we caught in the stream just below it. later years (10-13), i worked at the meadowcroft village, when it was 1st being built planting pine trees on weekends and getting paid .50 cents an hour)))))) later(1976-1978)when i was attending PENN STATE i worked there as resident "potter" on weekends and gave tourists talks and demos of how a potter worked and made most of the utilitarian clay pots, bowels dishes....ON A KICK WHEEL!!!!! OP...this for you...it's a drawing I did of Pensacola some 30 years ago when I was doing alot of drawing...these are 2 blown up parts of the larger composite drawing...you probably recognize the ruins of Fort Pickens...the old San Carlos Hotel...Rosie O'Grady's...the old train station...the downtown coliseum (it was brand new back then)...and the flags down by the Bay Bridge that you spoke of that have flown over Pensacola...these are all from photos I took while on site including the sea oats on the dunes...the shot of the entire print didn't turn out...I didn't lay it flat and it had a hugh wave in it that distorted it...maybe I'll get a better shot of it tomorrow.

Even with the big budgets you'd be surprised how often contractors come out in the red on those government jobs. I've seen it happen. Too many cooks, countless redo's and a lot of waste.

Surely most of us have designed for the approval of a committee? And worse, a committee made up of politicians!
A good chunk of my portfolio is made up of artwork a committee didn't choose, because I would be embarrassed to show people the finished product. Even a committee of two can become a PITA.
I may be wrong, but I would guess this project got dragged through design he'll before getting final approval.

why would they use something old fashioned like a pencil drawing when they can obviously use cutting edge design software, like MS Word, to create the magical icons that reflects both tranquility and something something else that represents man's struggle with with the sea...
