Are you ready for a little feel good story? Coming right up!
Once again, I had the opportunity to take in one of Dan's Sculpting Workshops via photography. But I really wanted to visit for another very special reason this round.
SignCraft Magazine's editor Tom McIltrot was a special guest, and I could NOT let that chance go by of not meeting him!
You can BET I geeked out and had him sign my article.
Well, Tom did one even better before this. He got on the phone and asked me when he could come see my house.
See, I was in SignCraft 2 years ago in an article on what I do with signs today. Amazing irony isn't it? You can do something for 20 plus years and quietly do your thing, but push it to a level that personally speaks to you in 3 years and land in one of the world's most famous magazine? Yeah. Irony for sure.
Anyway, Tom did much more than just visit my home. He mentored me as well. I was stalling on my ebook but he took the time to chat it up with me, and figure out where my issues were. It was design. And Tom's rather good at that.
He sketched out ideas on what would make my ebook sing. That night I went home and stayed up VERY late playing with the new look. And have been tinkering on the project ever since.
If you believe in people entering your life for various reasons, add this to one of your stories for sure.
Tom is one of the most amazing, gentle souls. And I'm better for having met him.

And he still looks so young. Tom and his family changed the face of the sign industry, and he's still the same humble man that he was thirty years ago.

Lucky you, Donna in BC. I read your blog this morning and I've been smiling all day. In case I haven't mentioned it lately, you inspire me and a whole lot of others. Personally the only people that ask for my autograph are my accountant and my lawyer, but if I ever get my hands on some of your Funky Junk, I will want it autographed. Come to think of it, I did leave my "autograph" on your BBQ, your downstairs wall and inside your fridge. Actually it was Dan that did the fridge. I've worked on projects with both Tom and John. First class organization all the way. Which reminds me I've got a couple of ideas for articles to run past them. Just like this place, SignCraft relys on subscribers, advertisers and contributors.

Tom is a good guy. I've known that for many years through my interactions with him (and his brothers) professionally. I've also enjoyed many personal phone conversations with him on a regular basis as we talked about our kids and families. I was delighted when he took up our offer for him to be a guest at our workshop.
Watching Tom in action with our other attendees was amazing. He takes a genuine interest in everyone he meets. This was especially obvious as he interacted with each of our employees and members of our family through the days he was here. Each time Phoebe was in the shop he gave her personal attention and they worked together on her project.
When I grow up I want to be more like Tom.
