It's been about twenty years since I've done an exterior glass sign., gilded letters in reverse and black background. These jobs were fashionable in Ireland in the eighties and nineties but not anymore. I have two to do now for a client. My question is what type of black paint you people would recommend. Something with maximum adhesion and won't crack over the years

Can you get a 'drop black' over there? It's still a readily available standard here. (heavily pigmented, and quick drying and tough in a sort of semigloss.)

We used to use a product called Stazon. It was used by neon sign makers to paint black on the parts of the neon glass tube that were to be "blacked out". It is a very opaque, quick drying paint. I bought some a few years ago from a local supplier.

Stazon is brittle, and you have to thin it w. laq thinner. Use 'synthetic silk screen enamel' instead. It's the same material that Rick Glawson sold as "decor back up".

Letterhead Sign Supplies has the back up black like Rick's and it works great.

We used Ronan's solid covering lamp black with quick rubbing varnish. Never a problem.
