Hey Tim...If I were to be looking for a new computer??? (laptop or desktop) for speed

What aspects would you consider most imoptant?

Processor speed or RAM?

Don't include Hardrive storage capacity. Don't need too much.

funny you should ask Dave I'm getting ready to order this and put an ssd drive it it to load the programs and OS only,...I intend to use a portable enclosure for the drive it comes with,...

edited to add,...that just about maxxed out my budget,...and I keep most of my data on external storage such as flash and sata usb enclosures

Ok to really answer your question,...I consider the processor and ram more so than the speed in "ghz" or "mhz" on a laptop,...a good laptop will usually have the processor slowed down some to augment the cooling of the chip due to limited space and venting,.....I am partial to asus and toshiba laptops due to my past good experiences with them,....the toshiba's have weak hard drives if made by toshiba but one can swap a drive alot cheaper than it seems,...especially if they keep several old drives salvaged from dead machines,...
I've never really had alot of money to spend on a premium machine so my personal choices are primarily dictated by my budget,....

edited to add,....I've not had good experiences with amd chips and prefer intel ,...I've seen one too many amd chips cook themselves and though they may be cheaper they lose that thrifty luster with a premature death,...

Back in the old days...2008 and before...if a computer did not have a high Front Side Bus Speed, I looked the other way. It did not matter how much ram or cpu processing power you had, if you did not have a large Front Side Bus...you were going nowhere. I would always get a good laugh outta the ads and claims for a fast computer using just the ram, cpu, and hard drive specs with hugh numbers...but ignoring the Front Side Bus Speed. If you are building a computer that does not use the newer cpu technology(which does away with the Front Side Bus) then please make sure your Front Side Bus Speed is 800Mhz or better...like somewhere in the 1600Mhz range. Dave, To me the most important spec on a motherboard was always the Front Side Bus speed. Look up Front Side Bus on Wikipedia for more info.

Thanks Tim...Shirl and I are currently using ASUS G75VW laptops. I upgraded mine to 16 gig of RAM. They are big clunky laptops but for our purposes, sometimes being used as TV's at our Mexican home, they suit our purposes.

Here in Canada, my E Machine desktop is so much quicker though.

I guess that laptops will never be as fast as desktops.

Computer speed is kinda a funny thing with us old farts...We have all the time in the world to wait....BUT....what if we "tip over" before an application finally opens??? [Eek!]

Joe...I had forgotten that Solitaire was included with a standard Windows installation!!! Shows you how long it has been since I wasted time playing it. But, yep, I do spend time on the internet. I'll never catch up to your 10,000 + posts though!!! There has never been enough free time in my day to post as much as you do!!! [Razz] [Rolling On The Floor] [Razz]

Dave,... laptops could be faster,...but they wouldn't last that long due to overheating issues,....the worst thing one can do with a laptop is to put it down on bedding, upholstery,or a rug as that blocks the vents and causes overheating,...

edited to add,....if you want to speed up your asus just stick an ssd in it and sit back and relax knowing you're getting the most bang for your buck,....

Actually, Tim, ours came with 250 gig SSD's and 750 gig HDD's. Operating system and programs are on the SSD's. User files are on the Hdd's
