That black plastic stuff that practically everything is made of now -- computers, telephones, etc -- what is it? Polypropylene? Polyethylene? Whatever it is, how can you stick something to it? I've tried every kind of tape but none of them hold for long. There's a product called Scotch-WeldTM DP-8005 that claims to do the job but it's very expensive. Then there's LOCTITE® PLASTICS BONDING SYSTEM, cheaper. Does anyone know what will work?

I was thinking that most desktop computer shells and monitors are made of ABS plastic. At least they were when we were building prototypes for Compaq (now HP).
Here is what I found online...
In most cases the front panel of PC case is made of ABS plastic (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), plastic, usually gray or white in volume, but the exterior can be painted in any color. In fact, most of the details of plastic used in phones, gadgets and computers are also made of ABS plastic, all thanks to its low density, simple molding technology and good mechanical resistance.
It really depends on what you are trying to adhere to the ABS type plastic.

OK, for starters, I've got a piece of bristol stock about the shape and size of a 14" ruler, on which I've printed a bunch of notes re computer ops. I want to attach it to the top front edge of my monitor. I've tried various tapes and none of them hold for more than a few days. Likewise I want to permanently attach a note to the telephone answering machine.

I agree with Mr. Cole....3M VHB tape should hold it on there. You can find it at Ace Hardware..usually. It is grey or clear foam tape with a red release liner.
