I'm currently living smack dab in the Bible belt. Not a prude, but when I saw this yesterday, I thought "did I see what I think I saw?!" Over the top?
I imagine someplace like Miami or Vegas, something like this wouldn't raise an eyebrow. But, this town had more churches than WalMarts.

Craig, my first thought was I couldn't believe the customer okay'd the artwork. Low class! Second, this town is ridiculously picky with sign permits. So how did they get a permit for this trash?

We have the same thing happening here. I think it's all about the shock value. She managed to get national news coverage across the country with only the cost of a single billboard rental.

Ya know, you can't make that move with your hand, it ain't natural. Just give it a try.

Alicia...I just gave that move a try...it's a bit of an effort with the left hand...but with the right hand I can raise any single finger easily with little effort...although the middle finger does seem to be the easiest...maybe from all the practice I've given it over the years. ...not really

It made me smirk, then queezy.. I miss good peer pressure. I hope this helps the mom who's trying to teach her kids what is acceptable in polite society.

Yes it has sunken that low and will most likely sink evan lower.

Do you ever stop and wonder if people making a big deal about this, is kind of the reason it's profitable to do it?

There obviously are two threads going on at once here: One is a social commentary. The other is advertising. The advertising thread could hold a discussion about shock value verses class and it's long term value or detriment.
If you are asking "What's wrong with that" the answer might be better understood by questioning the approprietness of it for all eyes. And the Advertiser who is blatantly screaming we do not care, anything for a buck. Arguing about which finger is raised is childish. Graphically it is yelling, "Blank You!", in a cleaver way.

As far as advertising value, I guess it comes down to demographics. I suspect the main market for engagement rings would be young males....given what is seen every day on TV and over the internet, the lyrics of modern music etc., the vast majority of them would not be offended by this. Has the moral standard sunk in modern society - undoubtedly in my opinion, however, this is relatively mild in comparison to what we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Her finger can't possibly be that long. Photoshopped in my opinion.
I do have to say, I don't like it, but it isn't as bad as some of the strip club signs you see along the highway. It is hard to raise your kids the way you want when it is legal to put out anything you want. Once I was behind a guy in a pickup truck that had graphics on his back window of women with their legs apart & more-Can you imagine a mom with kids in her car behind him?
I am wondering how far they will go, until they cause accidents?

And as far as morality being lowered, its not that simple. Younger people today are much less sensitive to things such as this but take a higher moral stand on things like race relations than our grandparents. I find segregated restrooms much more offensive than some innuendo.
Also, I would rather my children be exposed to the female form than the violence, death, and decay on the evening news.

I wouldn't call this morality as more of a manners, dignified behavior or even showing class. Dan, your pc behavior references are a non sequitur here.

I didn't say anyone was dumb. Playing dumb which most people know to be a way of pretending not to see the obvious or to see the point being made. Anyways, it wasn't directed at you Dan so what is your point?

It made us look and talk about it....I think that the ad is very effective....and that is,exactly, what Lamar is looking for......but close Lamar? I doubt it. How do you go about closing a company that is not violating any law and, which owns over 155,000 frikin billboards?
Check it out:
This is an extract from something I read:
"Lamar Advertising Company is the nation's leading outdoor advertising firm. Lamar offers solutions for clients in the form of bulletins, posters, digital billboards, buses, benches, transit shelters and highway logo signs. Founded in 1902, Baton Rouge-based Lamar has a broad corporate reach with over 200 locations across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico specializing in outdoor and transit advertising.
In addition, Lamar has 22 locations devoted to the highway logo sign business. This network provides clients with local market insight, as well as the services provided by a firm on a national scale.
With over 100 years of corporate history, over 800 media reps across the U.S. and a market-leading inventory of over 155,000 outdoor advertising structures, Lamar has built its reputation as the foremost outdoor advertising firm in the United States. Lamar essentially offers our customers a blank canvas and provides the support to deliver their messages with maximum impact, from inception to completion."
Craig, the rules of the game have changed and, sadly, we must learn how to adapt and do the best we can, at home, to educate our children properly.
This is nothing compared to other changes that are happening in front of us, every day......I will not bring any those changes (that I have noticed) to this topic because by mentioning any of them, here, I am afraid it will start another intellectual war in this forum.........Which, incidentally, I would, personally, find extremely fascinating.
