Peggy had a four day trip to Brussels, Belgium last week and I was lucky enough to tag along. They are known for their chocolate and beer and the Beer Temple is the only place outside the monastery where you can buy the world's #1 rated beer: Westvleteren, brewed in small quantities by Trappist monks.
A gold leaf dimensional sign from a local brewery in Brugge:
The beer wall in Brugge - I wish I'd had a wide angle lens - this wall is massive

Sonny - that is some very interesting stuff - I especially like the ornate sign brackets.... too cool. Did you mention how you liked the beer? Do they drink it cold or warm?

Todd, my wife (Peggy) is a flight attendant for Delta and flies mostly international routes. She brought me a Westvleteren XII last year and it really was the best beer I've ever had. I'm not a beer snob and anybody will tell you I'll drink whatever's in the fridge, but IMHO, the Trappist beers are noticeably the best. There are strict regulations and only 7 monasteries can brew under the Trappist labels. They only sell enough to keep the monastery going and charitable programs they support. Technically, you can't buy Westvleteren outside the monastery, but there's a gray market. I brought one back for a local chef here who does beer tastings and it was like handing him the holy grail. Here's a Wiki link that will give you the full rundown on the Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren and their NUMERO UNO beer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westvleteren_Brewery
If you ever want to know the real intricacies of brewing beer, look no further than our resident Brewmeister, Bill Diaz - he's a funky monk who knows his stuff. And if you come to Kewanee, you will be duly anointed by the Grand Poobah with his special blend of IOAFS suds.....
