We've done something similar, Barb, by playing a VHS tape on the TV, and having our video camera attached to the TV as well, set on 'record', so it records the VHS to the VCR hard drive.
You can then burn that to a DVD, or edit it (we use Corel-Ulead video studio, bought off Fleabay 2 years ago for about $50 (legitimate).
You can also use that program to shrink the videos to make them uploadable faster, rather than high-res.
It takes time however, to render it to a lower res, and also to learn to use the program. It is intuitive-not hard to figure out- but I am still a novice at it.

I bought a Sony machine to do this years ago and need to call their tech support every time I use it. Get something simple and it needs to do something called finalizing to get it to play on a DVD player rather than a computer.

WE purchased a panasonic vhs player to dvd burner combo. 140 bux. It plays the vhs tape and stores the info directly to make the dvd. It has menu maker, and other really nice features to make a real dvd that can be indexed and played just like a dvd movie from the dvd store.
My wife converted all the video tapes to dvd. Put that huge collection of tapes into one small box. Very nice..

I use the vhs to dvd but the problem is they take a couple of hours to do. A local shop here does them for 3 euro a go. I drop him in a bunch at a time and pick them up a few days later. Less hassle. I'm sure there are similar facilities near you
