That's an amazing and awesomely scary video, Bill. And, Mr. Harvey was right on the money.

We are pretty much, right there, today.

Prayers for our country are definitely in order.

Reading the "lead-in" message, although the original broadcast was in 1965, it was reworked and edited over the years.

I don't see anything all that prophetic, if the version of the broadcast posted was from many years later.

(edited to add) I always liked hearing Paul Harvey's broadcasts and I normally agreed with his observations. Including this one. Just wanted to point out the fact that it was not an original from 1965.

Sorry Dave, I don't give a rat's patookis what "those people" think is square.

I'm going to continue to pray, for us, for our country, even for OP, for as long as I breathe.

Too much has been turned upside down.... what was once unacceptable is now the norm; personal responsibility used to be expected, now many want someone else to take responsibility for them. Changes, brought about by times (and "leadership"), are not necessarily good ones, as this country is soon to find out.

Bottom line....right is still right, and wrong is still wrong.

Before you get too scared let's keep in mind that Paul Harvey was close friends with Joseph McCarthy and supported his witch hunt for communists back in the 50's...and we all know how crazy that got...every other person including your neighbor at that time he considered a communist...so I'm not frightened by this video at all.

Also I find his statement "If I were the devil...I would deify science" quite troubling. What does that mean any way. I think I know but I'll not bring that up in here...One of the things I find most scary and dangerous are people who reject science.

there WAS(and still are) people who thought slavery was the way things should be but that to CHANGED! as for you praying for me, i really dont need them if it means i have to see things your way. and you know thats never gona happen. ME being different then you, is WHAT MAKES ME WHO I AM, someone who is not you, or believes the same as you. i am happy with me and thats the only one i have to please. i have a problem with people who run with gods word........AS LONG IT SUPPORTS THEIR VIEWS)))) no matter how archaic they may be.

In regards to "Science"

As an avid true science and history lover, one doesn't have to look very far to see that "science" is very fickle- not at all as reliable as some people base and center their whole belief system around. True science involves creating a hypothesis, then testing the hypothesis to see if it is accurate- if it is not, then you move onto the next hypothesis- if you can find some sort of proof in the testing, then it can become a theory. If it is irrefutable, it can even become considered a scientific "law" (like the law of gravity for instance) which is simply our way of understanding something that we cannot see or touch- A true scientist does not simply "take somebody's else's word" for a hypothesis without studying and testing.

There are many many things around us that cannot be fully explained by our limited scientific reasoning, we try and we come up with some interesting ideas, hypothesis and even theories- but over time and testing many of those ideas can be soundly disproved. This is called "Junk Science".

The big problem with our culture is that we want to quirky replace fundamental foundations of our being with something as quirky as junk science and throw out everything else.

If you blindly believe everything that is thrown at you in the name of "science"- you are no better than the people who blindly believe everything that is thrown at them in the name of religion...

Well put Michael. Many of the great scientists of the past would be appalled at what passes for scientific inquiry today and no less so at the politicization of it also.

Michael...although I like your post...it shows thoughfulness...I had some problem with a statement or 2...do you really think "fickle" and "not at all reliable" are accurate descriptions of science...but maybe those comments were directed at the pseudo-sciences or as you called them "junk science" and not real science...because the scientific method has proven to be the most reliable and accurate method man has developed to interpret the physical world around him...it is always open to new evidence that will add to and advance our knowledge and understanding...sometimes new information results in revising a presently held view or even debunking a formally held one...often involving a very laborious process of observation, testing, and retesting among scientists...I hardly think "fickle" would be the best term to describe this process.

Lastly...and I hope I'm not being too contentious because I always enjoy your postings...but for your last statement to be true one must equate science to religion...and I don't think they are even remotely the same.

The first anti science comment came from Paul Harvey in the video...I simply called attention to his statement..."If I were the devil I would deify science."

In my opinion I found that statement to be very anti science and troubling...that statement probably revealed an apparent distrust he had for science...my guess is that some prevailing scientific thought was in conflict with one or more of his beliefs...seems that when science and one's personal beliefs come into conflict with one another...that person will attack science as being a flawed system...all the while never honestly questioning that maybe it is their belief that is flawed...but having the courage to question one's beliefs is one of the hardest things a person can do...at least that has been my personal experience.

Rusty- the deification of science is exactly what has happened in the last 50-75 years- science is not the problem, it's the prevailing idea that everything else besides science, is wrong.

This is where one needs to look at the larger picture- we and our world are very complex beings that can't be simplified down to a handful of chemical compounds. A broader study and understanding of Sociology, Psychology, History, Science, and yes, even Religion... all point to the same thing- although we try really really hard, we are still incredibly limited in even putting a dent into the mysteries around us- but at the same time get super defensive if someone tries to shake up what we "think" we know. Which my point is simply: NOT AS MUCH AS WE THINK WE KNOW.

This is where I agree with you on the idea of challenging of beliefs...

Ever tried to discuss the countless flaws of the theory of evolution to someone who has made up their minds that the theory is absolutely correct in every way: simply because some scientist told them that- they get very very upset. Because it disrupts their belief system- there are so many parts that they can't explain, don't have valid scientific proof... but they are still willing to risk everything just to hold onto their beliefs. So if someone doesn't agree, they are now the enemy.

Many of those same people will scoff and ridicule someone who mentions any idea of religion- which btw, according to all accounts of history and sociology, has been a key part of our existence- in all societies and throughout recorded history- long before science, even.

I had an incredible science teacher who taught me that science is not an "either / or" discipline- there are things to be learned everywhere...

Michael...thanks for your thoughtful answer...I know I'm doing this without your permission...so I apologize now...but I'm going to rewrite one of your paragraphs but with a few substitutions to illustrate a point...I think this will illustrate that both sides of this argument can be guilty of the same way of thinking.

Compare the paragraph below to your paragraph above

................................................
Ever tried to discuss the countless flaws in the belief of the Genesis story of creation to someone who has made up their minds that the belief is absolutely correct in every way: simply because some preacher told them that- they get very very upset. Because it disrupts their belief system- there are so many parts they cant explain, don't have valid scientific proof...but they are still willing to risk everything just to hold onto their beliefs. So if someone doesn't agree, they are now the enemy.
.................................................

Seems to me this cuts both ways...when one starts from a fixed position it is near impossible to view oppositional material in an objective manner...it is really really tough to approach many of our beliefs and opinions with open minds...myself included...however it does happen...people can and do change their minds about what they believe...I know I did.

I thought from your first post that you were coming from a creationist point of view and I can respect that...afterall that was my position for half of my life...going back all the way to the 70's when I was a divinity student at Liberty Bible College...so I see your point of view...I understand it...and respect your right to freely believe it...but I would also ask in return that you respect my right to conclude differently from you on this issue...a conclusion that came not merely by taking some scientist's word for it...but by involvng myself in the study of it from both points of view...from Carl Baugh's take on the dinosaur footprints in the rocks at the Paluxy River in Glenn Rose Texas...to Duane Gish's apologetics on creation from the Institute for Creation Research...to Ken Ham and his Noah's ark obsession...Henry Morris and his idea of how hydralic sorting produced by the Noahic Flood explains the distribution of fossils in the fossil record...to Kent Hovind...creationism apologist (I personally was able to attend one of his lectures) and who by the way is also a pretty good comedian...to Michael Behe's "Irreducible Complexity" theory and many many more...however I also looked into the opposing point of view... Darwinian evolution by means of natural selection...which as you know is the prevalent view held by the vast majority of scientist today...the study of evolution sparked an interest in me for paleontology which resulted in digging, collecting, and examining a myriad of fossils from different parts of the country and asking questions about what they could mean...from 400 million yr. old gastropods, bachipods, and ammonites in the Ordovician shales of middle Tenn where I live...to beautiful 300 million yr. old fern and plant fossils from Paleozoic coal mines around Birmingham Al...65 million yr. old fish fossils from the famous Green River Formation in Wyoming...to trilobite fossils from way back in the high desserts of Utah...and believe me that part of Utah has some pretty desolate country...I only mention these to illustrate that not all people are just taking someone's word for granted without examining those words for their veracity as well as other opposing views...Michael thanks again for the civil discourse and your always helpful and insightful postings...and I'm not just saying that...I'm sure Bob's head has exploded by now.

Guys,

Never mind Bob's head explosion......You are, really, messing me up with all this verbal attack on each other....I am too frikin' old to be exposed to all this exchange of high level knowledge......I am very happy with all that I have learned in my lifetime, so far. But I, of course, don't mind learning some more.....So, please, calm down......Rusty, you are throwing too much, for my so limited brain capacity.

I was doing just fine, when I was reading Michael's last writing.....I even agree with him. But, then, Rusty brought in the big guns and started to fire with what he learned during his time as a divinity student at Liberty Bible College.......This is when I started to get dizzy and had to stop to say something on behalf of us the not so highly educated.

Please, understand this......I am only a sign painter who loves controversy....Yes, I do. But you, Rusty, are abusing my brain capacity.

OK, let's continue the battle, now.....and by all means, Rusty, behave yourself and try to make an effort and whatever you are going to say, say it so we, the brain challenged, as I am, can understand it.

Thank you.

RD

Ricardo...I certainly didn't mean for this to sound like a verbal attack and hope Michael doesn't take it that way...but on a more serious note we should all be concerned about Bob's head explosion...now that could be serious.

Hey, Rusty.....It just occurred to me....maybe you and I could go on the road with our comedy act.....I'll be the straight man and set you up for the jokes.....that way you'll get all the credit for being the funny one.

I think you just made Neil blow a gasket....Excellent !!

Now, coming back to more pressing matters.....I, really, do worry about Bob.

Ricardo...I'm on with the road show...but it's a 60/40 split in favor of the funny guy.

Rusty...Good idea !

Anyway, I do hope that our friend Bob has recovered, by now, and has, also, learned, from this improvised and unexpected exchange, how to diffuse a possible explosive and unpleasant situation among friends.

A very Happy Thanksgiving to you, Bob and all those who participated in this comedy act.

Say Good Night Rusty !!
