A lot of people dont know that Thomas Jefferson carried a gun all his life but was such an incompetent he managed to shoot only one person.

I've had a gun most my life and havent been able to shoot anybody. Nothing but tin cans and targets.

OP - just to clarify: AR15's are NOT fully automatic 'machine guns' as you state. They are semi-automatic. No different than a small bore .22 target rifle. They do look menacing and they are a beautiful piece of industrial design. Odd as this may sound, I enjoy guns as much for the design as anything.

What do I own these guns for? Pleasure shooting, hunting, and protection - as promoted and described by our founding fathers.

The AR15 is an excellent varmint gun.... I had to shoot a coyote that was hanging around the perimeter of our yard in broad daylight staring at my kids...very unusual acting. I suspected he was rabid....finally put him in my sights one day when he was trotting along the back field. Took him down with one shot, 140 yards, iron sights. I was pretty pleased with that shot.

Here is a lesson for those that think 'Assault Rifles' (a menacing term used by the liberal media to instill fear into it's viewers)are military combat weapons:

Semi Automatic Rifle (such as the AR15: you must physically squeeze the trigger each time you want the gun to fire. One trigger pull equals one shot fired. Holding the trigger in a depressed position does NOT release a continuous volley of ammunition.

Fully Automatic Rifle (illegal for sale in most states - generally sold only to law enforcement agencies and the military): These rifles generally have a switch on the the gun which allows either single shots or fully automatic operation. In the fully auto mode, depressing and holding the trigger continues to fire ammunition until you release the trigger.

Back to the topic at hand: I see nothing wrong with protecting one's employees, business, and personal safety from kooks and criminals.

Animals have an instinct for self-preservation and will fight to survive. It should come as no surprise that human beings would have a desire to protect what they cherish: their lives and their property.

Well said Todd!!

Just my two cents! I have a Concealed/Carry Permit (in New York State.......not easy to get). Carry a Ruger LCP all the time & like Todd have a fantastic "Varmit" gun.........an AK-47! Love that gun!! [Smile]

"I see nothing wrong with protecting one's employees, business, and personal safety from kooks and criminals." That statement can easily go both ways. My wife and I came home late last night after working. When I pulled in the driveway, my wife asked me "Who is that?" My stupid ass thought she was talking about the two cats in the driveway. She went on to explain once we got in the house there was a man lurking outside. I go outside and there is a neighbor from across the street. I don't know him but the guy next door to him says he's a kook and keeps him up all night. He comes over and says he is looking out for the lady that lives directly across from him. He's wearing a t shirt, pajama bottoms and has a holster with a pistol in it. What, I'm supposed to feel safe. He went on and on about an opossum in the neighborhood, ( now I am completely terrified ) and the teenagers walking up and down the street. Sorry, but I can see nothing good coming from this, it's totally unnecessary and quite frankly it scares me. This guys house is in a shambles. We live in a rather quiet decent neighborhood. The average response time for the police here is under two minutes. I will be dropping by the police station today!!!!

My response to Billy's comment was about the comment, not Billy. We have been friends for a long time, even wrote some articles for Sign Business together years ago. Certainly, I was not saying that Billy was dumb, only the statement that he made.

For the record, I've never owned a gun in my life and shot one for the first time this past summer when I was on a men's retreat and we did some target shooting.

You cannot legislate morality. If someone wants to kill me they can find a way. There are already laws against killing people and many of them are aimed at guns. In my opinion, more laws will not keep people from harming each other. The laws we have now are intended to do that and yet those who violate the law do so outside of the present laws. If they intended to abide by the law they would not harm anyone, by any means.

We can punish those who violate the law, but the law itself does not prevent the action of those who do not respect the law.

My Dad used to say, "Locks only keep the honest people out".
