Hey, remember that scooter I said that I bought my son a short time back? He crashed it by driving off a tall median (it was dark out) he was riding on and put flat spots on both rims by landing at 20mph (not sure how fast that is in Canadian). He no longer rides it . . .
You think it's in the DNA???

I would have been generous enough to teach her a lesson that should have been learned many years ago. She isn't too old to learn the truth about life and how cruel she is to treat an animal with such disregard, but to teach her children that this is so worthless and a baseball game is more important, is despicable.
To teach this woman that just because she is insensitive, and cruel to innocent animals, etc. that you will not tolerate going to her level instead to teach her that this is the way real life is, and you are happy to have shared that with her so she will become a better person.
Maybe she came across your path to give you the opportunity to help teach her to be a better person and human being, that animals are family, just like that.

I'm a "cat person", at least in that I prefer them over dogs, and I appreciate their stealth , balance, and agility. We have a number of them, I'm going to try and post a picture of kiTTen.
We got kiTTen after his mother abandoned him, he was the size of a bratwurst. He's the gray one on the right. The kids nursed him along with eye droppers and bottles. He's gotten a lot bigger. In the picture he's laying with Cattatude, who's cleaning his tail. In spite of all this though, I think the most cogent statement in this thread is by David O' Hanlon: "An employee that doesn't show up today because their cat died, needn't bother showing up tomorrow." The West is moving from one major religion to another. In places where that other religion is prevalent, 25% of the annual crop is lost to rodents because the people can't bring themselves to kill a rat. This is a very large country. Animals are neat, but they're not people.

We have dogs and cats. I think Dana's and I involved with our animals is well documented. We love our animals and they are very much an integral part of our lives.
That being said, neither one of us has lost a day of work due to the euthanizing of any of our animals.
I totally agree with David O' Hanlon's statement of "An employee that doesn't show up today because their cat died, needn't bother showing up tomorrow."
That doesn't make me heartless, just realistic.

I offer that this could create a difficult situation going forward with a valued employee - and not one solution works for all situations. Nothing is 100% . . .
It also depends on the company policy for their 'days off/vacation' and how much notice is given.

I guess it like the lawyer phrase that hard cases make bad laws. No matter how you feel, this one incident isn't worth fretting too much over if all ends well. Now if he has 50 cats, we may have a problem.

I would have said, "My guy had to take the day to deal with some personal issues."
Its vague enough for them not to pry or apply value judgements on its merit. I think most of the time it gets people to think of the last family emergency they had that required time off and they accept it.
The use of "had" lends the idea that you know what is going on and agree with the necessity of the situation.
