I may be using Signgold as part of an exterior window gilding project ( some of the glass has a protective film on inside). I've been told it needs to be edge sealed, ....and I've also been told it doesn't need to be . What would you tell me ?

SignGold has always recommended that it be edge sealed.
I've done it both ways. On some projects where I didn't seal it, I've noticed some discoloration creeping around the edges. On other projects there was no problem.
I do a lot of Edge-printed SignGold giving the lettering a black outline and shadow. After printing, I'll cut it and weed it. Then I'll apply a laminate to it and then use my plotter to cut a 1/8" outline around the lettering, weed it and premask it, ready for installation. Its extra work, but it seals the edges and protects the print. Best of all, it gives everything a nice clean traditional-looking finish when installed.

I was a former rep. and clip art design provider for signgold and I personally found it time intensive to use it very much. They claimed at the time there was a clear laminate over the material. They have it at Pacific Supply or the place over in your neighborhood I think. Too bad Johnny, is not around, he would have had it nailed with the real thing. I sure enjoyed watching and learning his tricks I could use for myself...

......for some reason my message was cut off (?) to continue..... I've never used Signgold. Part of the work is 2nd surface Boston gild, using the "real thing". However, some of the windows have what is called smash and grab protective film on the inside.....thus preventing a traditional gild. So the only way to continue the gold theme, which is many lineal feet of a decortive "wave" with many small edges (that's why I would rather not have to seal)is on the outside of glass.

I used SignGold on my 2000 Chevy truck 11 1/2 years ago and there is virtually no discoloration. I had one little segment of a very thin stroked letter come off about a year ago. I did NOT seal it at all. I used the Florentine Swirl and found the ridges of the swirls catch the tip of the Seal-it pens too much. I don't think it's worth the effort.

I used in on window lettering about 5 years ago WITHOUT edge sealer. It is holding up well. I recently did a boat and DID edge seal it only because of the harsh environment and constant washings. I agree with Dave, I don't think it's worth the effort.
