A question has come up about HDO with a customer. He has asked, "Would HDO be appropriate for this application, and last longer than MDO?" I've also gone to my local lumber store to ask about the price of HDO compared to MDO, but unfortunately they don't supply HDO locally. So is there truly an advantage with HDO over MDO and if so, where can I find a supplier?

HDO is High Density Overlay ... it is more like Formica ... MDO is slightly porous overlay.

Originally, it was designed for highway sign because it could take more beating from the weather and weather and things flying off vehicles.

MDO will be good enough for 99% of your needs ... as long as you use the higher grade of MDO, and not the Big Box Store grade ... which is really for making furniture and cabinets.

Derby Line ??? Ever make a wrong turn and wind up in Canada?

And just what is wrong with winding up in Canada Si??? [Rolling On The Floor] [Rolling On The Floor]

It is just fine during the 3 months of summer sometimes.

You know my preference for the other 9 months of the year.

Thanks for the help Si! Much appreciated! I know my way around so it's hard to get lost, but I know lots of people finding themselves crossing over the border on accident!

Brendan, like Si said, HDO was made for applications requiring more outdoor longevity. It is much better quality material, but harder to find.

Additionally, if you use it, take extra time to prep it before painting, or you may have adhesion problems. The surface of HDO is 'slicker than MDO (more like fiberglass resin), and requires a good sanding and cleaning before painting.

They used to use HDO for some highway signs where they stuck reflective sheeting on it and didn't paint the back or edges and it would hold up.

It's a bugger to find unless you want to order a warehouse of the stuff. Sign suppliers won't get it for you.

MDO used to hold up real well, but now I don't know. Shoot a lot of things held up real well in the past.

Brendan,
Gimme a call some time. I make runs to a place in NH every so often that might have some other substrates that suit the need.
