This is a modern day question that all of us will be encountering.
A lot of jobs are requiring HDU instead of wood.
This job is a way finding system at a YMCA camp. These are single round wood poles into the ground with directional signs or multiple round posts for maps and information. Most posts will have some rope sections wrapped and nailed on (decorative details)
This is at the beach. So they want HDU routed signs with simulated wood texture backgrounds. Simple.
They want a washed out or bleached color woodsie background. (light color)
Now I would normally paint a base of lighter color and then a glaze darker top coat that is wiped off to leave only in the deeper color in the texture.
My question is .....would you use a water base semi gloss or a flat latex?
If I use semi gloss on top of flat base......it seems to grab and stick too well.
If I use a semi gloss base and top coat (better).......Ill have to prime all the posts and rope first.
Any thoughts................

FLAT, and only flat. Paint that is 'weathered'
always turns flat.

I agree too about flat paint.
I have found that the semi gloss or egg shell finish lasts a long time on normal sandblasted or routed signs.
The glazing coat works so much smoother with semi gloss vehicles in the paint.
Flat latex dosen't seem to "Wipe Off" so well without a "Clear" base mixed into it.
Using water breaks the strength of the paint, but I guess this would be OK if the first coat is good.

Also this finish painting has to go over the natural wood posts, rope, primed 1/8" aluminum backer panels, & the HDU faces & edges.

I don't like any shine on my wood look signs...it's my personal preference...gloss looks plastic and fake to me...I use flat all the way...even on the glazes...your finish might not last as long but I'll sacrifice that for a more natural look any time...I get enough life out of the flat finishes to please me and my customers anyway...never a complaint.
