Anyone have a trick up their sleeve for approximating distance? A customer wants a sign with letters big enough to see from an intersection. Various factors make it impossible to walk the distance with a wheel. Customer says it's a thousand feet, I think much further.

just walk 20 normal steps, then measure the distance and divinde by twenty. My steps are exactly 2.27 feet, always. Either that, Dave or get a real long ruler?

Put a pair of binoculars where people can use them to read the sign.

Think of the area in terms of a football field,..how many football fields is it? a thousand feet is 333 yards or 3 and 1/3 football fields,..if you've never played football think of it in terms of a tennis court or some sort of space you are familiar with and then add up the number of spaces(units of measure) you think are there and multiply by the finite number of feet you know would make up each unit. often as not you can judge space by counting units of measure very closely such as number of cinder blocks and or panels on a wall (or rows of brick even if you are a glutton for punishment),...

Had one a month ago to measure from the side of a building, across the lake to be legible from a bridge. I guessed it using the football field theory at about 1,000'. Then used a range finder and it said 1,300'. My chart showed the minimum height at 1,000' is 24" I layed it out using 4' and 3' lettering.
Maybe if there's an obstacle half way to measure to, then double it.

Thanks for all that responded. I was using the football field method and guessed at least 5 football fields. I found a solution though. I can pace off 2 legs of a right triangle, so then it's simple geometry to figure the long distance which is the angled view.
