If it is the reader you are going for I recommend the iPad. We looked at them all and loved the clarity of the screen in the iPad and also the versatility of the device. They are certainly pricier than just a reader but we have no regrets.

anything with electronic ink is pretty cool ... using Kindle, myself ... hope he likes it ... plus battery life is crazy long. It took a while before my battery on the kindle starting holding it's charge for a month plus ..... so don't get discouraged if the battery life seems dismal at first. After a few charges everything will hopefully be OK.
now considering the kindle fire, mostly because of needs, size and PRICE ......

Been reading ebooks on my blackberry phone for at least 5 years, reading books on playbook since I got it. The thing with me is not to be locked into one source for books which unfortunately seems to be the way things are going.
With pads or readers today that means if you have a kindle are you locked into Amazon? If you have an Ipad are you locked into the Apple store? If an author makes an arrangement with one publisher but not another, are you sh*t out of luck? If you change devices in the future, can you take your library ( which you've purchased ) with you? ....
Ebooks today truly need a commonopen sourced format, and a single standardised open sourced DRM protocol, and unfortunately, until this is done, it is the consumer who bears the brunt of the risk.

I've been reading stories online about the very issues you discuss, and it's getting pretty hairy out there, along the lines of what you are asking.
But if we're all just reading TXT files, then everyone will just share and pirate, the way they do fonts. It is crazy.

With our iPad we can access anything from the Kindle bookstore or from amazon as well as any others including the iStore.
