I've gone and done something stupid...I'm doing a restoration job on an old #!$%# balsa sign...I decided to seal it by hand with a thin coat of paintable silicone...I had a small amount of paintable silicone caulk in the gun from my last job...I quickly used it up and in a rush picked up another tube thinking it was paintable...after applying a thin continuous coat over a rather large area...don't ask me to explain...it would take too long and I would feel stupid...I waited for it cure before painting...it was then that I realized that in my haste I had picked up 100% unpaintable silicone...the paint just beaded up...because of the conditions in which the silicone has been applied it is impossible to remove...so I go online and ask for a solution only to get many answers ranging from it's impossible to paint over to a variety of ways and steps to paint over it...the problem is these answers are sometimes contradictory...anyone had this problem...and if so were you able to correct it satisfactorily?...hoping you guys have an answer.

Rusty, I do not know if this will work or not. Try and see if shellac will stick to it. It isnt exactly a paint but it can do some remarkable stuff.
It may just work as a sealer then start painting over it.

I did something similar a few months ago. It was a small area, but I let the silicone dry, cleaned it with alcohol, and then primed with Sherwin Williams DTM Bonding Primer - then painted with Porter acrylics like I usually do. So far, there have been no problems. It's exterior, too.
