I've been thinking about this for awhile...the new composite material for decking is pvc. Most of them have an embossed wood pattern. Why not personalize those decks for businesses or private homes? You could carve the stair risers, posts...or why not just say to heck with it and put a big old image your client loves in the middle?
This is a sample piece to try it out. It was carved at 1/16" deep, but I think it's too much. I'll do another at 1/32" and if that's too much I'll take it down to 1/64"...I'm not afraid! I don't want people to trip on it, after all. At that depth, I don't think too much water or dirt will gather there...at least not so much that it can't be swept/blown out...but you'll still see it easily.
I have a sketch book full of stuff like this I want to try out and as I add more skills to my toolpath...I mean tool bag, I want to experiment more.
Big thanks to Bill DeBekker for tips and suggestions on feeds and speeds for cutting. Bill forgot more about cnc maching while we were talking than I'll learn all year.

Doug, If you contact a few good contractors and show them this option, they will do the selling for you! Everyone loves personalized stuff and this will keep your ShopBot humming and pay the bills. Great idea for a new market. I've done a few etched-look designs for shower doors and mirrors for contractors that want something special for their high end homes. It's fun to be creative.

I was contacted the other day about doing some lettering on a memorial bench, I suggested that we use the composite deck boards and route them - now I have an image to share. Thanks Doug!

Great idea Bernie! You could use colored PVC like Sintra and glue it in. One step further, you could digitally print on a thin layer of Sintra and cover it with a piece of clear Lexan (poly carbonate plastic) that is almost unbreakable. Then you could have a full color design, logo or even a photograph right in your deck. I feel the coffee kicking in....
