In the past I've cut stencils using high performance vinyl for boat painters spraying urethane. Some say stencil works great but can sometimes be difficult to remove. Has anyone experienced another vinyl for spraying urethane that won't break down and is easily removed?

Thanks in advance.
Ray

masking material is made for easy removal.
High performance vinyl is not.

After my last experience, I would recommend a test before using any product. I've used the paint masks by different manufactures with very good results up until the last time> iwas working with urethanes, all was going well up until I sprayed a mixture of tinting clear and color over the artwork. When I went to pull up the mask it was extremely hard to get up and left so much residue I couldn't save it and had to start all over. I redid my thinking and did the effect without the clear and had no problems. I'm still not sure if it was the clear or the heavy application that caused the problem. BTW, this brand was Pask Mask.

I hear you George, I've had nightmares using Masking Material, there's a removable Vinyl that's made for short term Graphics that is not aggressive, not sure who makes it.

You guys (and gals) should try Hexis green mask. It has a French name, but is the best mask I've ever used. They have a white high tack and this green stuff. It comes off real easy but holds a good edge. Just clean the substrate well first. Jer/Artworx

yeah, what John said. The vinyl mask material works good, but so does just plain old application tape. pounce lettering and hand cut.If you're using either one though I usually try to remove it before the paint dries all the way.doesn't seem to be as bad of an edge then.Just be careful it doesn't tear and drop back onto the tacky paint!

Forgot to add, I usually spray a light coat of intercoat clear or DBC500 first. This seals the edges to prevent bleeding.

In the old days we use to use a product called tuffback but the paint left too much of a build up on the edge. The layout we are using is very detailed. Hand cutting would be too time intensive. So application tape would be out. What is the product name for ordering the masking material? Reducer in urethane can be the worst enemy for the stencil. Anyone personally experienced spraying it with urethane and reducer mix?

Thanks for your responses.

In removing masks there are(at least?) 2 problems
Mask is to sticky.
Paint is to dry.
With the right mask and the right dryness
remove it carefully [Wink] !
With acryl waterbased size ("glue") for leafing I have found it is best to remove mask before gilding
With alkydoil paint I found it helpfull to give a last layer/stroke a few hours before removing, keeping the top not cracking, but neither "tready".
And, about uretane,I know, as usually, nutting!
